On Specific Features of Fantasy Genre Translation: A Contrastive Analysis of the English Original of the Novel Vampireslayer and Its Czech Translation

Abstract:

Tato translatologicky zaměřená diplomová práce se zabývá stylistickou analýzou překladu románu Vampireslayer a jeho českým překladem Zabíječ upírů. V první části rozebírá originál románu ? stručně shrnuje jeho děj a popisuje důležitá místa a postavy. V druhé části se zabývá stylistickou rovinou ? a to jak teoreticky, tak i konkrétními znaky románu. Třetí část rozebírá soudobou terorii překladu, čímž si připravuje půdu pro následující kapitolu, kterou je analýza překladu. Ta se zaobírá rozdělením překladových jednotek na kategorie podle společných rysů, jež určují atmosféru románu, ale také vlastní jména v románu. Na konci kapitoly je taky několik příkladů všeobecně nepovedených překladů ? ty sice nespadají do žádné z daných kategorií, ale jejich chybné převedení ochuzuje překlad celkově.

Abstract:

This master thesis focuses on the stylistic translation of the novel Vampireslayer and its Czech translation Zabíječ upírů. Its first part studies the English original ? it briefly sums up its plot and important places and characters. The second part deals with the stylistic level ? both on theoretical grounds and their particular reflections in the novel. The third part focuses on the contemporary theory of translation, thus making grounds for the last chapter, the translation analysis of the novel?s Czech translation. This part deals with the division of the translation units into categories (according to their characteristic features) which create the atmosphere of the novel and also analyses the proper names which appear in the novel. At the end of the chapter there are also some examples of general units, which do not fall into any of the categories but their wrong translation weakens the novel?s effect on the readers.
