The role of the North Atlantic Alliance in conflict resolution and crisis management outside the Euro-Atlantic area

Abstract:

Organizace Severoatlantické smlouvy (NATO) je politická a vojenská aliance spojující země euroatlantického prostoru. Za hlavní cíle se považuje ochrana demokracie a míru a kolektivní obrana členských států. Po skončení studené války se postupně proměnila v sílu napomáhající státům i mimo její členskou základnu. Tématem mé bakalářské práce je role Severoatlantické aliance v řešení konfliktů a řešení krizí mimo euroatlantický prostor. Cílem mé bakalářské práce je vysvětlit, jak Severoatlantická aliance plní svoji bezpečnostní roli v oblastech mimo euroatlantický prostor, a objasnit, jak stabilizuje vybrané regiony a zda účinně plní své funkce. V této práci analyzuji konkrétní aktivity NATO v letech po rozpadu SSSR až do současnosti, aby výsledky mého výzkumu byly co nejaktuálnější. Zblízka se zaměřím na konkrétní vojenské i politické operace, nejdříve na první leteckou operaci NATO v Bosně a Hercegovině z roku 1995, která pomáhala zemi při rekonstrukci po válce. Jako další popíšu konflikt v Kosovu v roce 1999, kde se NATO snažilo donutit jugoslávského prezidenta k ukončení vojenských akcí. Dále se budu věnovat mírovým operacím v Afghánistánu v letech 2003-2014, které spočívaly v asistenci afghánské vládě v udržování bezpečnosti v zemi. Poté zmíním výcvikové mise jednotek v Iráku od roku 2004 a jako poslední budu psát o vojenské intervenci v Libyi v roce 2011, kdy NATO vynucovalo dodržování zbraňového embarga a bezletové zóny vyhlášené Radou bezpečnosti OSN. V závěru práce představím výsledky mého zkoumání.

Abstract:

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a political and military alliance uniting the countries of the Euro-Atlantic area. Its main objectives are considered to be the protection of democracy and peace, as well as the collective defense of the member states. After the end of the Cold War, it gradually turned into a force helping states outside its membership base. The topic of my Bachelor thesis is The role of the North Atlantic Alliance in conflict resolution and crisis management outside the Euro-Atlantic area. The aim of my bachelor's thesis was to explain how the North Atlantic Alliance performs its security role in areas outside the Euro-Atlantic area, and to clarify how it stabilizes selected regions and whether it effectively fulfills its functions. In this work, I analyzed the specific activities of NATO in the years after the collapse of the USSR and the end of the Cold War to the present, so that the results of my research are as current as possible. I focused closely on specific military operations, firstly on the peace support operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995. Then on the conflict in Kosovo in 1999, where NATO sought to force the Yugoslav president to end military action. I also focused on the peace operations in Afghanistan in 2003-2014, which consisted in assisting the Afghan government in maintaining security in the country. Then I mentioned the troops' training missions in Iraq since 2004, and lastly I wrote about the military intervention in Libya in 2011, when NATO enforced the arms embargo and no-fly zone declared by the UN Security Council. At the end of the work I presented the results of my research.
