"Paul Robeson, Here I Stand, and Black Power."

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on Paul Robeson's fight for African-American civil rights in the United States in the mid-twentieth century. Focusing on his opinions, critical attention is paid to his persecution by the government, cancelled passport, and his activities both artistic and legal. In particular, the bachelor's thesis discusses Robeson's 1958 book Here I Stand and its vision of Black Power. After an analysis and summary, there is a comparison of his manifesto to the philosophies of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. It is argued that Robeson's vision of Black Power was in some ways already realized by King in his effective organizing of the African American community in the early 1950s. Robeson's ideas contrasted with X's Black Separatism in their racial inclusivism based on working-class solidarity. Ultimately, Here I Stand is an important document for understating the situation of blacks in mid-century America, though Robeson's erasure from history means that it will not receive requisite attention.

Táto bakalárska práca sa zameriva na boj Paula Robesona za práva Afro-Američano v Spojených Štátoch Amerických v dvadsiatych rokoch minulého storočia. S upriamením pozornosti na jeho názory, bola venovaná kritická pozornosť jeho obvineniam vládou, zmrazenému pasu a jeho aktivitám, ako umeleckým tak aj právnym. Vo všeobecnosti, práca sa zameriva najmä na knihu Here I stand a jeho vidinu sily Afro-Američanov. Po analýze a zhrnutiu, dôjde k porovnaniu jeho filozofií spolu s tými od Martina Luthera Kinda Jr. a Malcolma X. Hovorí sa, že vidina Black Power bola úspešne organizovaná už Kingom práve jeho efektívnym organizovaním Afro-Amerických komunítv päťdesiatich rokoch minulého storočia. Robesonove nápady kontrastovali s tými od Malcolma X a jeho oddeleniu Afro-Američanov od solidarity voči pracujúcej vrstve. Každopádne, Here I Stand je dôležitý dokument pre porozumenie situácie na prelome storočia v Amerike, aj napriek tomu, že Robesonovo dielo Here I Stand, nedostane dostatočnú pozornosť.
