Ethical hacking methodology implemented in the OU IT infrastructure environment

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá etickým hackingem a jeho metodikou zaměřenou na univerzitní prostředí. Obecná část popisuje základní aspekty etického hackingu, jeho znalostní rámce a obecnou metodiku. Část práce, zaměřená na univerzitní prostředí, popisuj jeho aspekty a jeho klíčové systémy. Jsou zde popsány systémy IS/STAG (pro správu studijní agendy) a Moodle (pro online výuku) včetně autentizačních metod. To vede k vytvoření metodiky, jež je přizpůsobená tomuto prostředí. Metodika útoku zahrnuje techniku bruteforce, která zneužívá slabé politiky hesel, zejména používání defaultních hesel odvozených z dohledatelných údajů. K shromažďování dat bylo využito aktivního přístupu. Vytvořená metodika pro etický hacking v univerzitním prostředí je praktické části aplikována a úspěšně vede k objevení nálezů. Výsledky ukázaly, že přístup k citlivým informacím byl možný díky identickým přihlašovacím údajům napříč systémy a jednoduchému formátu hesel. Nálezy jsou předány CIT OSU a čímž dochází k posílení kybernetické bezpečnosti univerzity. Na základě těchto zjištění jsou navržena doporučení pro zlepšení bezpečnostní politiky, zvýšení bezpečnosti a školení uživatelů.

Abstract:

This thesis descriibes ethical hacking and its methodology focused on the university environment. The general part describes the basic aspects of ethical hacking, its knowledge frameworks and general methodology. The university-focused part of the thesis describes aspects of the university environment and its key systems. The IS/STAG (for student management) and Moodle (for online learning) systems are described, including authentication methods. This leads to a methodology that is adapted to the university environment. The attack methodology includes a bruteforce technique that exploits weak password policies, in particular the use of default passwords derived from traceable data. A combination of active and passive approaches were used to collect data. The developed methodology for ethical hacking in a university setting is applied practically and successfully leads to discovery of findings. The results showed that access to sensitive information was possible due to identical logins across systems and a simple password format. The findings are forwarded to the OSU CIT, thereby strengthening the university's cybersecurity. Based on these findings, recommendations are proposed to improve security policy, enhance security, and user training
