The construction of mans identity in lifestyles magazines

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na konstrukci mužské identity v mužských lifestylových časopisech Maxim a Men´s Health. Metodou obsahové analýzy konstruovaného roku z let 2002 – 2004 se snaží identifikovat, jakými způsoby je ve vybraných titulech prezentován obraz muže. Přednostně se snaží zjistit, zda-li daná periodika vycházejí při konstrukci mužské identity spíše z tradičních rolových vzorců nebo více využívají rolové vzorce alternativní. V teoretické části při tom vychází z několika mediálních konceptů (sociální konstrukce reality, ideologie a hegemonie, reprezentace, stereotypizace), sociologických reflexí pozdně moderní společnosti (konzumní kultura, teorie identity, narcismus) a genderových konceptů (pohlaví, gender, biologický determinismus, sociální konstruktivismus, tradiční mužské a ženské role, krize mužské identity, nová mužství). Analýza dochází k závěru, že časopis Maxim se podílí na reprodukci tradičního stereotypního obrazu maskulinity, naopak časopis Men´s Health prezentuje muže rozmanitějšími způsoby, a podílí se tak na konstrukci nové mužské identity. V dílčích oblastech byla analýza doplněna kvalitativními postupy.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on a reconstruction of man´s identity in lifestyle magazines for men, Maxim and Men´s Health. By means of content analysis of constructed year from 2002 to 2004, the thesis aspires to identify how the image of man is presented in chosen titles. It gives priority to detecting whether the given periodicals construct man´s identity on traditional role patterns or rather employ alternative role patterns. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on several media principles (social construction of reality, ideology and hegemony, representation, stereotypisation), on sociological reflexions of late modern society (culture of consumption, theory of identity, narcissism) and on gender concepts (sex, gender, biological determinism, social constructivism, traditional man and woman roles, crisis of man´s identity, new menhood). The analysis concludes that the magazine Maxim contributes to a reproduction of traditional stereotypical image of masculinity whereas the magazine Men´s Health presents men by more varied means and thus participates on the construction of a new masculine identity. In particular areas, the analysis was completed by qualitative procedures.
