The Socio-lexical Analysis of Women's Language in the French Rap

Abstract:

Bachelor’s diploma thesis deals with the analysis of main features of the women's language in French rap songs. The textual analysis is based on 40 songs of four French female rappers (namely Diam's, Keny Arkana, Lady Laistee and Princess Aniès). The selected corpus consists of four subcorpora of ten songs from each of the rappers. The theoretical part of the work focuses on the definition of women's language as a subject of linguistic study as well as the description of its characteristic features and the comparison of different approaches of linguists to the women's language in a diachronic perspective. Furthermore, the theoretical part deals with the development of the female rap from the sociological and sociolinguistic point of view. The practical part of the work includes the analysis of two specific aspects of women's language in rap: firstly, the form and the intensity of female vulgarity and secondly the lexical frequency of the expression of attitudes towards men in rap songs. In relation to the comparative male corpus, the degree of female vulgarity is lower while in relation to the everyday women's language, it appears to be higher. Amongst four female rappers, the subcorpus of Diam's is marked by a significantly higher level of vulgarity than the remaining ones. In the second aspect, the analysis proves that female rappers adopt predominantly positive attitude towards the opposite sex which disproves the original hypothesis of adopting mostly negative attitude due to consolidation of position on the rap scene being for the most part represented by male rappers.

Bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá zkoumáním vlastností jazyka ženských interpretek ve francouzském rapu. Podkladem pro textovou analýzu se stalo 40 písní čtyřech představitelek francouzského rapu (jmenovitě jde o rapperky Diam’s, Keny Arkana, Lady Laistee a Princess Aniès). Vybraný vzorek z korpusu je tedy tvořený ze čtyř subkorpusů po deseti písních od každé interpretky. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na definování ženského jazyka jako lingvistického objektu zkoumání, dále na popis jeho charakteristických rysů a na srovnání přístupů jednotlivých badatelů k jazyku žen v diachronním pohledu. Dále je představen stav zkoumání vývoje ženského rapu ze sociologického i sociolingvistického úhlu pohledu. V praktické části práce jsou pak analyzovány dva konkrétní jazykové aspekty v ženském rapu: forma a míra ženské vulgarity a lexikálně-frekvenční analýza vyjádření postoje vůči mužům v rapových písních. V porovnání s mužskou částí korpusu je míra ženské vulgarity v rapových písních nižší, ovšem vůči každodennímu jazyku žen se zdá být vyšší. V rámci minikorpusů se u rapperky Diam’s projevuje výrazně vyšší míra vulgarity než u zbylých třech rapperek. V druhém aspektu analýza prokazuje převážně pozitivní postoj rapperek vůči mužům, co vyvrací naši hypotézu o projevu převážně negativního postoje z důvodu upevnění pozice na rapové scéně zastoupené z velké části mužskými interprety.
