The relation between motivation to control prejudice and reaction on its failure

Abstract:

Tato výzkumná práce se zabývala souvislostí mezi motivací ke kontrole předsudků vůči lidem s postižením a emoční reakcí na selhání této kontroly. K motivaci kontrolovat předsudky bylo přistupováno z pohledu sebedeterminační teorie, která motivaci rozděluje na šest typů. Ovšem výsledky výzkumu odhalily pouze čtyři typy motivace být nepředsudečný. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 74 respondentů ve věku od 16 do 46 let. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo celkem 54 žen a 20 mužů. Respondenti byli náhodně rozděleni do dvou skupin, experimentální a kontrolní. Po vyplnění falešného testu implicitních asociací bylo půlce respondentům oznámeno, že test odhalil jejich silnou preferenci lidí bez postižení (experimentální skupina), druhé polovině nebylo oznámeno nic (kontrolní skupina). Výsledky výzkumu odhalily, že s růstem autonomní motivace se v experimentální skupině oproti kontrolní signifikantně zvýšily negativní emoce zaměřené na sebe a snížily negativní emoce zaměřené na ostatní. Ovšem u kontrolované motivace a amotivace nebyl zjištěn signifikantní rozdíl mezi oběma skupinami týkající se prožívaných emocí. Výsledky tak naznačují, že lidé s vyšší autonomní motivací po selhání kontroly předsudků prožívají vyšší negativní emoce, jako je vina a zahanbení, než jinak motivovaní (či nemotivovaní). Výzkum také objevil spojení mezi postojem vůči lidem s postižením a typy motivací být nepředsudečný.

Abstract:

The present paper was concerned with link between motivation to control prejudice against people with disability and affect response to the control failure. The motivation to control prejudice was viewed by the self-determination theory perspective which divides the motivation into six types. However, the research results showed only four types of motivation to be nonprejudiced. The study sample consisted of 74 re-spondents, whose ages ranged from 16 to 46 years. The sample was comprised of 54 women and 20 men. Respondents were divided into two groups – the experimental and the control. After the Implicit Association Test completion one half of the participants was informed that the test had detected their strong preference for people without disability (the experimental group), the other half was not informed about anything (the control group). The results discovered that negative self-directed affect increased significantly and negative affect directed towards others decreased significantly with rising autonomous motivation in the experimental group compared to the control group. In regard to controlled motivation and amotivation however, there was no significant difference in the experienced affect between the experimental and control group. The findings suggest that after the control failure people with higher autonomous motivation experience more negative affect, such as guilt or shame, than people with other types of motivation (or no motivation at all). The research also found association between the attitude to people with disability and the types of motivation to be nonprejudiced.
