Therapists’ experiences of attraction to clients in couple therapy and its impact on the therapeutic process

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá zkušeností terapeutů se situací, kdy jsou přitahováni jedním z klientů v párové terapii. Studie se zaměřuje na prožívání, uvažování a způsob řešení terapeutů v takovéto situaci. Pozornost je věnována také vlivu přitažlivosti na terapeutický proces. Teoretická část přináší přehled dosavadních výzkumných zjištění v oblasti přitažlivosti v terapii a terapeutického procesu. Dále přibližuje související témata sebeodhalení, supervize a etiky. Studie má kvalitativní design a metodou analýzy dat je interpretativní fenomenologická analýza. Výzkumný soubor tvoří pět terapeutů s absolvovanými terapeutickými výcviky v různých směrech. Pomocí analýzy bylo identifikováno sedm témat: „Vznik přitažlivosti jako přirozený proces“, „City ke klientům jako zdroj radosti i nervozity“, „Zpracování přitažlivosti – intenzita, která se dá zvládnout“, „(Ne)ovlivnění terapeutického procesu“, „Tendence ke stranění a vědomé rozdělování pozornosti“, „Vědomí kontextu a zodpovědnost v roli“ a „Sebeodhalení – co oni by s tím dělali“. Výsledky jsou prezentovány v podobě témat i zkušeností jednotlivých terapeutů a ukazují souvislost s teorií a předchozími výzkumy. V závěru práce jsou uvedeny výsledky v kontextu dosavadních zjištění, limity výzkumu a doporučení pro další zkoumání.

Abstract:

This study explores therapists’ experiences of attraction to one of the clients in couple therapy. The study focuses on the therapists’ feelings, reasoning and managing of the situation. The impact of the attraction on therapeutic process is also examined. The introduction provides an overview of recent findings within the area of attraction in therapy and therapeutic process. Subsequently related topics of selfdisclosure, supervision and ethic are presented. The study itself uses qualitative research design based on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The research sample consists of five therapists trained in different approaches to psychotherapy. Based on the findings, seven topics were identified: „Formation of Attraction as a Natural Process”, „Feelings towards Clients as a Source of Joy and Nervousness“, „Processing of Attraction – Manageable Intensity”, „(Not) Influencing of Therapeutic Process”, „The Tendency to Favor and Intentional Dividing of Attention”, „Awareness of Context and Responsibility in a Role” and „Selfdisclosure – What They Would Do with It”. The results are presented in a form of the topics and essences of experiences of each respondent and show coherence with theory and previous findings. In discussion the results are presented within the context of current findings. Limitations of the study and recommendations for future research are discussed.
