The translation of military terminology and expressions in Stephen E. Ambrose´s Band of Brothers

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of translation in English literature with the theme of the Second World War. It focuses primarily on translation of one of the chapters in the book of an English author Stephen E. Ambrose called Band of Brothers. An inseparable part of the work is constituted by a commentary with special reference to the translation of problematic or interesting passages. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to compare the general characteristics of English and Czech military slang in the Czech translation of the book. The thesis will present a linguistic and stylistic analysis of the original and a commentary on the translation. The thesis also outlines the issue of general and professional translation focused on military terminology, and offers its author´s own translation solution of one chapter of the book.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je popsat teoretickou i praktickou stránku překladu anglické literatury s tématikou 2. světové války. Práce se zaměří především na překlad vybrané kapitoly uvedené v knize Bratrstvo neohrožených anglického autora Stephena E. Ambrose. Práce předloží jazykovou a stylistickou analýzu originálu a komentář k překladu se zvláštním zřetelem k překladatelsky problematickým či zajímavým pasážím. Práce rovněž nastíní problematiku obecného a odborného překladu, zaměřeného na vojenskou terminologii. Cílem bakalářské práce bude podat a porovnat obecnou charakteristiku anglického a českého vojenského slangu v českém i anglickém překladu knihy. Práce uvádí také vlastní překladatelská řešení.
