Translationese in fiction – a case study among Czech secondary school students

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na jazyk překladu (tzv. translationese), jehož existenci a znaky popsalo již mnoho lingvistů a který se svými normami a principy liší od jazyka původního. Práce zkoumá, zda dané odlišnosti jazyka překladu dokáží identifikovat sami čtenáři, a zjišťuje, jaké konotace si s jazykem překladu asociují. Práce se inspiruje výzkumem finské teoretičky překladu Sonji Tirkkonen Condit jejím hlavním cílem je zjistit, zda jsou středoškolští studenti schopni rozpoznat původ dvanácti beletristických textů, tedy určit, zda se jedná o text přeložený, či původně český. Komentáře objasňující danou volbu sloužily pro analýzu strategií, které čtenáři uplatňují. Skóre respondentů pak byly v závislosti na pěti proměnných, kterými bylo pohlaví respondentů; jejich zaměření; počet knih, které přečtou za rok; počet jazyků, které ovládají a extra jazyková zkušenost (např. jazykový certifikát či pobyt v zahraničí). Získaná data ukazují, že texty byly správně určeny v 59,29 %, výsledky se však diametrálně lišily v závislosti na jednotlivých textech. Bylo také zjištěno, že žádná ze zkoumaných proměnných není přímo závislá s počtem správných odpovědí. Nicméně získaná data a mohou být zajímavá právě proto, že se týkají čtenářů samotných. Konkrétně středoškolští studenti byli skupinou s přínosnými a relevantními poznatky.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the language of translation (so called translationese), its existence and characteristics have been described by several linguists, which differs from the original (non translated) language by its norms and characteristics. The thesis mainly investigates whether the differences of translated language can be identified by readers and tries to find out what connotations readers associate with translations. The research is inspired by a study conducted by a Finnish linguist Sonja Tirkkonen-Condint and its main aim is to find out whether secondary school students are able to identify the origin of twelve fictional texts; in other words, whether they are able to determine which texts are translated and which are originally Czech). Commentaries provided by the respondents, explaining the given choice then served for an analysis of the strategies that the readers apply. Furthermore, the results were compared depending on five variables, which were sex of the respondents, their area of focus, number of books they read, number of languages they study and special linguistic experience (e.g. language certificate, study abroad, etc.). The data obtained show that the origin of the text was correctly identified in 59.29% of the cases. However, the results differed significantly depending on the individual texts. It was also found out that none of the observed variables is directly connected with high score in the questionnaire. However, the results can be interesting, because they focus on the readers themselves. Concretely secondary school students were a group with relevant and valuable observations.
