The (non)discrimination of Women in the US Labor Market in the Second Half of the Twentieth Century

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá pozicí žen na trhu práce na území Spojených států amerických v druhé polovině dvacátého století. Cílem práce je ověřit následující vědeckou hypotézu: ženy na americkém pracovním trhu v druhé polovině dvacátého století čelily diskriminaci, která se v čase redukovala. Společně s hypotézou autorka práce hledá odpovědi na následující výzkumné otázky: jak se měnila legislativa, která upravovala podmínky pro ženy na trhu práce a zlepšovala tak jejich postavení? Jaké dlouhodobé trendy lze vysledovat v mzdové diskriminaci žen? V jakých obdobích ženy nejvíce participovaly na trhu práce? Potřebné informace a dobová data byla získána z odborných studií, knih a statistických dat z vydaných pramenů. Po analýze získaných informací a dat lze dojít k závěru, že se diskriminace žen na trhu práce ve druhé polovině dvacátého století v čase skutečně redukovala. K jejímu vymýcení však nedošlo, legislativa nepůsobila na všechny plošně a mzdová diskriminace u určitých skupin žen přetrvala. Míra participace žen se rovněž mužské nedorovnala.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the position of women on the labor market in the United States of America in the second half of the twentieth century. The aim of the thesis is to verify the following scientific hypothesis: women in the American labor market in the second half of the twentieth century faced discrimination, which was reduced over time. Along with the hypothesis, the author of the work is looking for answers to the following research questions: how did the legislation, which adjusted the conditions for women on the labor market change and thus improved their position? What long-term trends can be traced in wage discrimination against women? In what periods did women participate the most in the labor market? The necessary information and historical data were obtained from academic studies, books and statistical data from published sources. After the analysis of the information and data obtained was conducted, the conclusion can be made that discrimination against women on the labor market in the second half of the twentieth century was actually reduced over time. However, it was not eradicated. The legislation did not affect everyone across the board, and wage discrimination among certain groups of women persisted. Equality in the participation rate of men and women was also not achieved.
