The Indian Paradox: Analysing the Influence of the British Raj in India's and Britain's Evolving Post-Colonial Relationship

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the influence of the British Raj on the post-colonial relationship of India and Britain. To achieve this, the thesis is divided into four main parts. The first part introduces the establishment of the East India Company on Indian land and their attempts at achieving their colonial goals. The second explores the eventual transition into The British Raj. This part uses Gandhi's autobiography and ideals as a contrast to the bloodshed of that time. Not only shedding light on the mistreatment of Indians, but also on the failure of Indian unity. The third uses statistics from the International Monetary Fund and claims from a political debate published by the Oxford Union that tackle the question of Reparations. This is done to express that the influence Britain had on India's economy is seen and spoken of to this day. The final part uses cuisine and architecture as vestiges that further emphasize the lasting effects of their evolving relationship. By observing the colonial relationship that India and Britain had, this thesis ultimately concludes that it is seemingly impossible for Britain and India to escape their past.

Účelem této bakalařské práce je analyzovat vliv Britského Rádži na postkoloniálním vztahu mezi Indií a Británií. Aby toho bylo dosaženo, je práce rozdělena do čtyř hlavních částí. První část představuje založení Britské Východoindické společnosti na indickém území a jejich pokusy o koloniální cíle. Druhá část zkoumá případný přechod na Britský Rádž. Tahle část využívá autobiografií Gándhího a jeho ideály jako kontrast ke krveprolitím té doby. Nejen že objasňuje špatné zacházení s Indy, ale také i k neúspěch indické jednotnosti. Třetí část je podložena statistikami z Mezinárodního měnového fondu a tvrzením z politické debaty vydaném Oxfordskou Unii, která se zabývá otázkou odškodného. Z toho vyplývá, že vliv Británie na indickou ekonomiku je viděn a mluví se o něm dodnes. Poslední část představuje kuchyni a architekturu jako stopy, které nadále zdůrazňují trvalé účinky jejich vyvíjejícího se vztahu. Pozorováním koloniální vztahů, který měla Indie a Británie, tato teze dochází k závěru, že je to pro Británii a Indi zdánlivě nemožné uniknout své minulosti.
