Learning styles preference based on sensory preferences among high school students and their school achievement

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem stylů učení založené na smyslových preferencích a školní úspěšnosti středoškolských studentů (konkrétně gymnazistů). Práce je rozčleněna na dva hlavní celky – teoretickou a praktickou část. Obsah teoretické části tvoří 4 kapitoly pojednávající o nejdůležitějších tématech týkajících se ústředního tématu diplomové práce. Jedná se o vymezení pojmů: učení, styly učení, učební strategie a taktiky, dále pak také školní úspěšnost a související pojmy, na závěr je uvedena charakteristika zvoleného vývojového období. Teoretická část také obsahuje některé zahraniční a tuzemské výzkumy na obdobná či příbuzná témata. Empirická část obsahuje kvantitativní analýzu dat (N = 222) získaných u adolescentů (14 - 19 let) navštěvujících vybraná gymnázia. Pro zjištění preferencí stylů učení studentů jsme použili metodu VARK Neila D. Fleminga, která je založená na smyslových preferencích osob. V této části jsme potvrdili nebo vyvrátili platnost postulovaných hypotéz a zodpověděli jsme výzkumné otázky.Zjistili jsme nejčastější preference stylů učení u respondentů a ověřovali jsme jednotlivé vztahy. Z výsledků vyplývá, že styly učení mají zanedbatelný vliv na prospěch studentů. Prospěch spíše ovlivňují dosažené známky, kde jsme zjistili středně těsný vztah. Tyto výsledky částečně korespondují se zjištěními tuzemských a některých zahraničních autorů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the issue of learning styles based on sensory preferences and school achievement among high school students (specifically secondary grammar school). This thesis is divided into two main sections - theoretical and practical. The content of the theoretical part consists of four chapters dealing with major issues concerning the central thesis topic. It is about the definition of terms: learning, learning styles, learning strategies and tactics, as well as school achievement and related concepts, finally gives the characteristics of selected developmental period. The theoretical part also contains some foreign and local researches on similar or related topics. The empirical part contains quantitative data analysis (N = 222) obtained from adolescents (14-19 years) attending chosen secondary schools. To determine student’s learning style preferences we used Neil D. Fleming’s VARK method, which is based on sensory preferences. In this part we confirmed or rejected validity of postulated hypotheses and answered research questions. We found the most common learning style preferences among respondents and verified various relations. The results indicate that learning styles have a negligible effect on the achievement level of learners. School performance affect better marks, we found medium tight relation. These results partially correspond with the findings of some local and foreign authors.
