Analysis of surface wind in the vicinity of J. G. Mendel station

Abstract:

Analýza větrného pole a vliv reliéfu na přízemní vítr byly studovány v okolí stanice J. G. Mendela v severní časti poloostrova Ulu na ostrově Jamese Rosse. Převládající směr a rychlost větru byly určeny na třech automatických meteorologických stanicích za pomoci průměrných a maximálních rychlostí a větrných růžic. Stejným postupem byla zpracována i reanalyzovaná klimatická data geostrofického větru. Převládající směr geostrofického větru byl určen jihojihozápadní s průměrnou rychlostí 9 m.s-1 a 5,9 m.s-1 v závislosti na tlakové hladině. Průměrná rychlost přízemního větru na stanicích se pohybovala od 5,6 m.s-1 do 6,6 m.s-1 , převládající směr větru se pohyboval v rozmezí od jižního po jihozápadní v závislosti na stanici. Porovnání hodnot přízemního a geostrofického větru ukázalo vliv topografie poloostrova Ulu na směr a rychlost větru v přízemní vrstvě atmosféry.

Abstract:

The analysis of wind conditions and evaluation of the influence of relief on the selected characteristics of the surface wind were studied in the area of Mendel Polar Station in the northern part of James Ross Island. The prevailing wind direction and speed were determined based on the measurements of three automatic weather stations via average and maximum wind speed and compass roses. The reanalysed climatic data of geostrophic wind from the project ECMWF/ERA5 were processed in the same way. The predominant direction of geostrophic wind in the designated area was represented as south-southwest with average speed 9 m.s-1 (850 hPa) and 5,9 m.s-1 (925 hPa). The average speed of surface wind at the selected stations ranged from 5,6 m.s-1 to 6,6 m.s-1 in the period 1st March, 2019 to 29th February, 2020. The prevailing wind direction occurred in the southern sector (Johnson Mesa) and southwest (Crame Col). The comparison of the surface wind and geostrophic wind confirmed the significant influence of topography of the northern part of James Ross Island on the characteristics of surface wind.
