Relationship between the theory of mind and the level of language skills in preschool children

Abstract:

Cílem výzkumu bylo rozšířit poznatky o vztahu mezi teorií mysli a úrovní jazykových schopností u předškolních dětí a případný směr tohoto vztahu. Dalšími dílčími cíli pak bylo prozkoumat, zda existuje vztah mezi konceptem teorie mysli a výchovnými styly, případně mezi výchovnými styly a úrovní jazykových schopností. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 32 dětí předškolního věku a jejich rodiče. Schopnost teorie mysli bylo ověřována The Sally – Anne testem (Baron-Cohen et al., 1985) a úroveň jazykových schopností pomocí Diagnostiky jazykového vývoje (Seidlová Málková,  Smolík, 2015). Rodičům byl předložen nestandardizovaný dotazník ohledně vývoje řeči jejich dítěte a dotazník výchovných stylů The Parenting Scale (Arnold et al., 1993), který byl pro účely tohoto výzkumu přeložen do českého jazyka. Do analýzy byly zahrnuty prediktory jako věk, skóry ze tří škál dotazník The Parenting Scale (Arnold et al., 1993), celkový skór i skóry ze čtyř jazykových rovin z Diagnostiky jazykového vývoje (Seidlová Málková, a Smolík, 2015). Z vysokých hodnot korelačních koeficientů bychom mohli usuzovat na vztah morfologicko-syntaktické jazykové roviny a přítomností teorie mysli, vztah výchovných stylů a úrovní jazykových dovedností, úrovní jazykových schopností vzhledem k věku a přítomností teorie mysli vzhledem k věku u zkoumaných dětí, ale tyto výsledky však vzhledem k velikosti výzkumného souboru není možné zobecňovat.

Abstract:

The aim of the research was to expand knowledge about the relationship between the theory of mind and the level of language skills in preschool children and the possible direction of this relationship. Other partial goals were to explore whether there is a relationship between the concept of the theory of mind and educational styles, or between educational styles and the level of language skills. The research involved 32 preschool children and their parents. The ability of the theory of mind was verified by The Sally - Anne test (Baron-Cohen et al., 1985) and the level of language skills using Diagnostics of Language Development (Seidlová Málková, & Smolík, 2015). Parents were presented with a non-standardized questionnaire about the development of their child's speech and a questionnaire of educational styles The Parenting Scale (Arnold et al., 1993), which was translated into Czech for the purposes of this research. Predictors such as age, scores from three scales of the The Parenting Scale questionnaire (Arnold et al., 1993), overall scores and scores from four language levels from Diagnostics of Language Development were included in the analysis (Seidlová Málková, & Smolík, 2015). From the high values of correlation coefficients we could deduce the relationship between morphological-syntactic language level and the presence of theory of mind, the relationship of educational styles and levels of language skills, levels of language skills considering the age and the presence of theory of mind with respect to age in children. But it is not podšívka to generalize these results because of the size of the research file.
