Margaret Sanger and eugenics

Abstract:

This bachelor's study examines the life and work of activist Margaret Sanger by focusing on the racial aspect of the birth control movement. It is simply unfair to label Margaret Sanger as a racist without understanding Sanger and her time. This paper will trace the development of Sanger's philosophy, her work and her association with eugenic thinkers. The extremely problematic alliance Margaret Sanger pursued with the eugenics movement was a troubling matter, and even to this day is. It will outline these influences and how they shaped Sanger's work and opinions about race over the years. The emphasis of this thesis will be on the true nature and ambiguities surrounding Margaret Sanger, the concepts of birth control, eugenics and feminism. For many people, Sanger was a heroine, a reformer who helped to free women from the dangers of unwanted pregnancy, and a woman who helped other women to have control of their own fertility. Others have discredited her as an evil villain who promoted negative eugenics among women of colour, immigrant women or women who were found unsatisfactory. She was even perceived to be the Antichrist by the Catholic church and the increasingly volatile debate over birth control, and particularly abortion, made Margaret Sanger the subject of controversy for the rest of her life, and even after her death in 1966.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá život a dílo aktivistky Margaret Sangerové se zaměřením na rasový aspekt antikocepčního hnutí. Označení Margaret Sangerové za rasistku bez pochopení jejího života a doby je jednoduše nespravedlivé. Tato práce bude sledovat vývoj filozofie Sangerové, její práce a jejího spojení s eugenistickými mysliteli a nastíní jak tyto vlivy měnili její práci a názory na rasu v průběhu let. Toto extrémně problematické spojenectví Margaret Sangerové s eugenickým hnutím bylo znepokojující a dodnes je. Důraz této práce bude kladen na skutečnou povahu a nejasnosti kolem Margaret Sangerové, její názory na antikoncepci, eugeniku a feminismus. Pro mnoho lidí byla Sangerová hrdinkou, reformátorkou, která pomohla osvobodit ženy z nebezpečí nechtěného těhotenství, a ženou, která pomáhala jiným ženám mít kontrolu nad svou vlastní plodností. Jiní ji zdiskreditovali jako zlého padoucha, který propagoval negativní eugeniku mezi barevnými ženami, imigrantkami nebo ženami, které byly shledány neuspokojivými. Katolická církev ji dokonce považovala za Antikrista a stále vrtkavější debata o antikoncepci, a zejména o potratech, učinila Margaret Sangerovou předmětem sporů po zbytek jejího života, a dokonce i po její smrti v roce 1966.
