Burnout Syndrome among Secondary School Teachers

Abstract:

Syndrom vyhoření je v dnešní době často zmiňovaným fenoménem psychického zdraví člověka. Může se objevit u lidí všech profesí a učitel není výjimkou. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda se u učitelů na konkrétní střední odborné škole syndrom vyhoření vyskytu-je, v jaké míře, a dále porovnat míru syndromu vyhoření u začínajících učitelů (do 5 let pedagogické praxe) a učitelů s dlouholetou praxí (nad 10 let praxe) a mezi ženami (učitelkami) a muži (učiteli). Práce se dále zaměřuje na subjektivní vnímání pracovní-ho klimatu ve škole a na míru podpory začínajících učitelů při adaptaci na toto pra-covní prostředí. Teoretická část se věnuje vymezení syndromu vyhoření a stresu a je-jich specifikům v učitelské profesi. Praktická část vyhodnocuje výskyt a míru syndro-mu vyhoření pomocí standardizovaného dotazníku Burnout measure (BM) a jeho skóre BQ. Statistické vyhodnocení pro hodnocení rozdílu v míře syndromu bylo provedeno pomocí Mann-Whintmanova U testu. Pro hodnocení pracovního prostředí a podpory začínajících učitelů byl použit nestandardizovaný dotazník a pro doplnění byl uskuteč-něn rozhovor s vybraným učitelem. Dotazníkového šetření se zúčastnilo celkem 39 respondentů. Výsledky výzkumu ukazují, že u sledovaného souboru pedagogů nebyla zjištěna zvýšená míra výskytu syndromu vyhoření. Průměrná hodnota skóre BQ tohoto souboru byla 2,4, což je podle interpretace BM uspokojivý výsledek z hlediska psy-chického zdraví učitelů na této škole. Rozdíl v míře syndromu vyhoření mezi začínají-cími učiteli a učiteli zkušenými nebyl statisticky významný, i když lze poukázat na vyšší medián skóre BQ u učitelů s dlouholetou praxí. Statistická významnost rozdílu v míře výskytu v rámci pohlaví také nebyla prokázána a vliv pohlaví nemusí hrát roli. Pracovní prostředí a podporu učitelů hodnotí učitelé této školy převážně pozitivně. Nejvíce rozlišné a také nejhůře hodnocené výsledky byly zaznamenány u výroku týka-jícího se dostatku prostoru k odpočinku a regeneraci. Tato část poukázala na odlišné potřeby jednotlivce a pro mnoho učitelů jeden z mála negativních prvků této profese. Mezi další negativa patří především velká administrativní zátěž učitelů. Pozitivně uči-telé hodnotí možnost se kdykoliv v případě potřeby obrátit na své kolegy, kteří jsou jim často velkou oporou. Rozhovor se začínajícím učitelem potvrdil výsledky nestan-dardizovaného dotazníku a zdůraznil význam podpory kolegů a vstřícného prostředí školy. Přestože výsledky této práce nelze vzhledem k rozsahu výzkumného souboru zobecnit na celou populaci učitelů, mohou nám přispět k lepšímu porozumění proble-matice syndromu vyhoření u učitelů a poukázat na oblasti, kterým je třeba věnovat zvýšenou pozornost.

Abstract:

Burnout syndrome is one of the most frequently discussed mental health issues today. It may occur in many professions, teachers are no exception. The aims of this research was to determine whether burnout syndrome occurs among teachers at a specific se-condary vocational school, to assess its prevalence, and to compare burnout levels between novice teachers (up to five years of teaching experience) and experienced tea-chers (more than ten years of teaching experience), as well as between male and fema-le teachers. The study also examines teachers’ perceptions of the school climate and the support provided to novice teachers during their adaptation to the school environ-ment. The theoretical part defines burnout syndrome and stress, with particular em-phasis on their characteristics in the teaching profession. The practical part evaluates the occurrence and the extent of burnout syndrome using the standardized Burnout measure (BM) questionnaire and its BQ score. Differences in burnout levels were ana-lysed using the Mann-Whitney U test. To evaluate the working environment and the support of beginner teachers a non-standardized questionnaire was used. Additionally, an interview was conducted with one teacher. The questionnaire was answered by 39 respondents. The results of the research show that the studied group of teachers did not exhibit high levels of burnout syndrome. The mean BQ score was 2.4, which, accor-ding to the BM interpretation guidelines, indicates a satisfactory level of mental health among the teachers. The difference in degree of burnout syndrome in novice eachers and experienced teachers was not statistically significant, even though the median of BQ score was higher in the experienced teachers. No statistically significant gender differences in burnout levels were found and the influence of gender may not play a role. The school work environment and teacher support at this school were viewed po-sitively overall. The lowest-rated (and the most diverse) item concerned the availabili-ty of space for rest and recovery biggest differences and the worst rated results were recorded in a statement regarding the space for relaxation and regeneration. This fin-ding reflects the differing needs of individual teachers and represents one of the few negatively valued aspects of the profession. Another negatively perceived aspect of was the heavy administrative workload. Teachers at this particular school appreciated the opportunity to seek advice and support from their colleagues whenever needed. Their colleagues are often a great support to them. The interview supported the questi-onnaire findings and further emphasized the importance of collegial support and a po-sitive school environment. Although the findings cannot be generalized to fit the wider teaching population because of the limited sample size, they contribute to a better un-derstanding of teacher burnout and identify areas that warrant further attention.
