Second Life: Motivation of users to enter and to remain and their perception of this virtual community

Abstract:

V posledních stoletích je náš život více a více ovlivňován technologiemi. Nová média se rozšířila do našich každodenních životů a lidé tak mají možnost dostat se do prostředí kyberprostoru. A právě zde vznikají nové virtuální světy, ve kterých se vytváří virtuální komunity. Cílem mé práce je prozkoumat prostředí virtuálního světa Second Life a v něm ustavujících se komunit. Důraz kladu především na zjištění motivací respondentů, které je vedou vstoupit a nadále i v tomto světě setrvat, ale také na fakt, jak obyvatelé tohoto světa vnímají tuto virtuální komunitu. Výzkumu, který má kvalitativní povahu, se účastnilo šest uživatelů z česko-slovenského prostředí světa Second Life. Byl veden formou kombinací metod polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a strukturovaných rozhovorů s otevřenými otázkami. Analýza získaných dat přinesla zjištění, že hlavní motivací pro vstup do tohoto světa je zvědavost. Motivací, která nutí obyvatele v tomto světě setrvat, je především naplnění sociálních potřeb, které je realizováno skrze navazování vztahů s jinými obyvateli, komunikaci, příslušnost ke komunitě, ale také možnosti seberealizace, terapeutické vlastnosti prostředí a celkové možnosti tohoto virtuálního světa. Výsledky také ukázaly dva rozdílné přístupy, skrze které respondenti naplňují své sociální potřeby.

Abstract:

In recent centuries, our life is more and more influenced by technologies. New media has spread into our daily lives and that way people have the opportunity to get into cyberspace. And that is where the new virtual worlds are created, in which the virtual communities are formed. The goal of my work is to explore the environment of a virtual world of Second Life, and within emerging communities. I place emphasis mainly on finding out the motivation of respondents to enter and to remain in this Word. Another point that I will particularly be interested in, is the fact how the inhabitants of this world perceive this virtual community. Six users of the Czech-Slovak environment of world Second Life have participated in this research, that has qualitative nature. It was conducted through a combination of methods of semi-structured interviews and structured interviews with open questions. Analysis of the obtained data finds out that the main motivation for an entry into this world is a curiosity. The motivation, which compels the inhabitants to remain in this community, is primarily the fulfillment of their social needs, which is realized through the establishment of relationships with other residents, communication, membership of a community, but also the possibility of self-realization, the therapeutic characteristics and the overall possibilities of this virtual world. The results also showed the two different approaches through which respondents fulfill their social needs.
