Development and competitiveness of agriculture in the Czech Republic and Germany

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem diplomové práce bylo charakterizovat vývoj a změny sektoru zemědělství České republiky a Německa. Zároveň se dle vybraných ukazatelů pokusit o porovnání konkurenceschopnosti daného odvětví zkoumaných států. K získání informací sloužila především data z databází EUROSTAT, FAOSTAT, webových stránek Ministerstva zemědělství České republiky a Německa a z oficiálních webových stránek Evropské unie. Následně byla provedena analýza zemědělství těchto zemí z hlediska využití výrobních faktorů a struktury odvětví. Na základě dat byly zjištěny podobné tendence ve vývoji daného odvětví v rámci zmíněných faktorů, nicméně z hlediska struktury odvětví panují určité odlišnosti. Dále byl uskutečněn průzkum zahraničního obchodu České republiky s pšenicí, kukuřicí a semenem řepky olejné, v případě Německa s cukrovou řepou, pšenicí a bramborami jakožto nosnými komoditami. Z živočišné výroby byly pro rozbor zahraničního trhu vybrány následující komodity: skot, hovězí maso, prasata, vepřové maso, kuřata a kuřecí maso. Z hlediska exportu a importu u prvních čtyř komodit živočišné produkce dochází při porovnání České republiky a Německa k opačným situacím. Česká republika se vyznačuje převahou objemů exportu živého skotu a prasat nad jejich importy, nicméně je závislá na dovozu zpracovaného masa. Naopak Německo se vyznačuje záporným saldem obchodní bilance u živého skotu i prasat, avšak objemy exportů hovězího a vepřového masa podstatně převyšují jejich importy. Dle zvolených ekonomických a ekologických indikátorů zemědělství bylo zjištěno, že zemědělství České republiky ve všech provedených situacích z hlediska porovnání vybraných ukazatelů převyšuje úroveň daného odvětví v Německu.

Abstract:

The main objective of the diploma thesis was to characterize the development and changes in the agricultural sector in the Czech Republic and Germany. At the same time, according to selected indicators, to try to compare the competitiveness of the sector of the countries under study. To obtain information, data from EUROSTAT and FAOSTAT databases, the websites of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic and Germany and the official websites of the European Union were used. Subsequently, an analysis of the agricultural sector in these countries was carried out in terms of the use of factors of production and the structure of the sector. The data revealed similar trends in the development of the sector in terms of the factors mentioned, but there are some differences in terms of the structure of the sector. Furthermore, a survey of the Czech Republic's foreign trade in wheat, maize and rapeseed was carried out, in the case of Germany, sugar beet, wheat and potatoes as carrier commodities. From the livestock sector, the following commodities were selected for the analysis of the foreign market: cattle, beef, pigs, pork, chickens and chicken meat. In terms of exports and imports for the first four livestock commodities, a comparison between the Czech Republic and Germany shows opposite situations. The Czech Republic is characterised by a predominance of live cattle and pig exports over imports, but it is dependent on imports of processed meat. Germany, on the other hand, has a negative balance of trade for both live cattle and pigs, but exports of beef and pork are significantly higher than imports. According to the selected economic and ecological indicators of agriculture, it was found that the Czech Republic's agriculture exceeds the level of the sector in Germany in all situations in terms of comparison of the selected indicators.
