A Semantic Analysis of Selected English Adjectives

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce je analýza tří skupin anglických formálních adjektiv. Přestože tato adjektiva bývají považována za synonyma a jsou v určitých kontextech zaměnitelná, v jistých aspektech se liší. V rámci analýzy je kladen důraz především na kolokační omezení vybraných adjektiv a rozdíly v jejich použití. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, přičemž v teoretické části jsou vymezeny základní pojmy a koncepty, s nimiž se dále pracuje v části praktické. Praktická část práce zahrnuje výzkum založený na datech získaných z Britského národního korpusu (BNC) a Korpusu současné americké angličtiny (COCA). Oba korpusy jsou představeny v teoretické části, stejně jako jazykový korpus obecně. Součástí praktické části je taktéž analýza slovníkových definic vybraných adjektiv, která vychází z vybraných výkladových slovníků.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to examine three groups of formal English adjectives. These groups of adjectives are usually regarded as synonymous but in spite of being interchangeable in some contexts, they differ in some aspects. Special attention is paid to the collocational restrictions of the selected adjectives and differences in their usage in general. The thesis is divided into two parts: the theoretical part provides background for the given problem and introduces some of the most prominent concepts. The research presented in the practical part is based on the data available in the British National Corpus (BNC) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), which are introduced in the theoretical part as well as corpus as a linguistic tool in general. The practical part of the thesis is based not only on the corpora, but also on dictionary analysis: definitions of the given adjectives from some monolingual dictionaries are offered and compared to each other to find out in what aspects the meanings of the selected adjectives differ.
