How audience and communicative purpose shape a text in the medical profession: guidelines for doctors and instructions for new parents

Abstract:

This master thesis concentrates on the genre analysis of two text types from the medical profession medical reviews and patient information leaflets. One type of texts is intended for health professionals and another type of texts is intended for non-expert audience, i.e. patients. The texts deal with medical issues such as breastfeeding and infertility treatment. After outlining the theory of genre analysis, considering both selected medical genres, communicative setting and medical language, the analysis is made on the basis of identified move structures. It focuses on the communicative purpose which shapes structural and lexico-grammatical features of the texts. The objective is to examine how expert-to-expert communication is reflected in doctor-to-patient communication.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na žánrovou analýzu dvou typů textů z lékařské profese - tzv. "medical reviews" a informační letáky pro rodiče, z nichž jedna skupina je určena lékařským odborníkům, zatímco druhá skupina představuje neodpobrné publikum, tedy pacienty. Jedná se zejména o texty týkající se kojení a léčby neplodnosti. Po popsání teorie žánrové analýzy, zvážení obou vybraných lékařských žánrů, komunikačního prostředí a lékařského jazyka, byla vytvořena analýza na základě identifikace tzv. "move structure". Analýza se soustředí na komunikační účel, který utváří strukturu a lexiko-gramatické prvky textů. Cílem je zkoumat, jak se komunikace mezi profesionály promítá v komunikaci mezi doktorem a pacientem.
