Translation and analysis of John Shirley's "Bioshock: Rapture"

Anotácia:

Cílem této práce je vytvořit překlad vybraných částí z knihy “Bioshock: Rapture” od Johna Shirleyho a provést jejich analýzu. Práce je rozdělena na tři hlavní části. První část obsahuje stručné představení knihy a jejího autora a následně také video-herní série Bioshock jako materiálu, ze kterého kniha vychází. Ve druhé části se nachází jazykový korpus, který porovnává český překlad s anglickým originálem. V závěrečné části jsou analyzovány konkrétní prvky z českého překladu, například ekvivalentnost výrazů či stylistických prostředků, a také použitých metod s odkazy na použitou literaturu. Závěr poté nabízí zhodnocení výsledného překladu, diskutuje proces překladu a z něj plynoucí závěry a shrnuje, do jaké míry byly splněny zadané cíle.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to translate selected parts of the novel "Bioshock: Rapture" by John Shirley and analyze them. The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part presents brief information about the novel and its author and subsequently introduces the Bioshock video game franchise as a source material for the novel. The second part contains the language corpus, where the Czech translation is compared to the English original. The final part analyzes specific elements of the Czech translation, such as equivalence of expressions or stylistic properties, as well as methods used with references to the studied literary sources. The conclusion then provides reflection on the final quality of the translated text, discusses the process of translation and resulting conclusions and summarizes to what extent were the set goals reached.
