Individual and Situational Factors for Experiencing Flow in Musicians

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat souvislost mezi self-efficacy a přítomností prožitku flow během hry na klavír u studentů a absolventů klavírního oboru hudebních konzervatoří a fakult a absolventů uměleckých škol. Dále bylo třeba objasnit, zda existuje souvislost mezi prožitkem flow a vybranými situačními faktory. Výzkumu se účastnilo 246 respondentů, kterým byl předložen standardizovaný dotazník FSS-2, dotazník GSE a účelově zkonstruovaný dotazník pro měření situačních faktorů. Výsledky kvantitativního výzkumu ukazují, že některé z dimenzí flow jsou popisovány intenzivněji než jiné. Mezi self-efficacy a flow byl nalezen zcela zanedbatelný vztah. Dále byl zjištěn vliv hudebního stylu na prožívání flow. Romantická skladba vyvolává flow intenzivněji než renesanční hudba. Na rozdíl od dosavadních studií se ukázalo,že respondenti prožívají flow více při hře o samotě, než při veřejných vystoupeních či v souboru. Výsledky jsou podrobněji popsány v diskuzi.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to scrutinize the connection between self-efficacy and a presence of flow while piano playing by students or graduates of the piano study programmes at musical conservatories and faculties or graduates of secondary musical schools. Furthermore, it was necessary to clarify an existence of connection between flow and chosen situational factors. The research sample of 246 musicians was given a standard questionaire FSS-2, a questionaire GSE and an intentionally designed questionaire for meassuring situational factors. The results of quantitative research show that some of the flow dimensions are described more intensively than other. There was found an entirely fractional connection between self-efficacy and flow. Next, there was detected an influence of a musical style on the flow experience. A romantic composition activates flow more intesively than renassaince music. Contrary to existing studies, the research has revealed that the respondents experience flow more while playing alone than in public or in an ensemble. The results are complexly described in the discussion.
