Electoral results in structurally disadvantaged regions

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zjistit, jak hospodářské charakteristiky ovlivňují volební výsledky ve strukturálně postižených regionech. Konkrétně se zabývá parlamentními volbami v letech 2010, 2013, 2017 a 2021 v ČR. Strukturálně postižené regiony jsou Moravskoslezský, Karlovarský a Ústecký kraj. Tyto regiony jsou skrze extrémy v neideálních hodnotách hospodářských ukazatelů historicky profilovány, jako levicové. Z tohoto důvodu jsou vlivy hospodářských a socioekonomických charakteristik testovány na ČSSD, KSČM a levicovou agregaci. Empirická část práce je založena na regresní analýze, která vysvětluje vliv hospodářských charakteristik na zisky výše zmíněných levicových uskupení. Vysvětlující regionální proměnné jsou: volební účast, zisk populistů, obecná míra nezaměstnanosti, dlouhodobá míra nezaměstnanosti, HDP na 1 obyvatele, čistý disponibilní příjem domácností, poměr obyvatelstva ve městech, poměr aktivních podnikatelů, poměr cizinců a věkové složení vše v 14 krajích ČR rok před konkrétními volbami. Růst obecné míry nezaměstnanosti a čistého disponibilního příjmu domácností vyústí v růst hlasů pro levici. Růst dlouhodobé nezaměstnanosti se projeví vyššími zisky krajně levicové KSČM. Růst volební účasti, zisku populistů, poměru urbanizace a poměru podnikatelů vyústí v pokles hlasů pro levici. Růst poměru cizinců v regionu by mohl vyústit ve více hlasů pro KSČM. Skalní voliči levicových stran jsou na základě stáří minulostí. Strukturálně postižené regiony se prokázaly, jako přetrvávající levicová základna. Každopádně lze pozorovat tendence změny na základnu populistickou.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to determine, how economic characteristics affect electoral results in structurally disadvantaged regions. Specifically parliamentary elections in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2021 in Czechia. The structurally disadvantaged regions are Moravian-Silesian, Karlovy Vary Region and Usti Region. These regions are historically profiled as left-wing through extremes in the nonideal values of economic indicators. For this reason, the effects of economic characteristics are tested on the Czech Social Democratic Party, Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia and left-wing aggregation. The empirical part of the thesis is based on regression analysis, which explains the affect of economic characteristics on the profits of the above-mentioned left-wing groups. Explanatory regional variables are: election turnout, populist profit, general unemployment rate, long-term un-employment rate, GDP per capita, net disposable income of households, urban population ratio, ratio of active entrepreneurs, ratio of foreigners and age structure all in 14 regions in Czechia year before the specific elections. The rise in the general unemployment rate and the net disposable income of households will results in a rise in votes for the left-wing. The growth of long-term unemployment will be reflected in higher profits of the far-left Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. The increase in election turnout, populist profits, urban population ratio and ratio of active entrepreneurs will result in a decline in votes for the left-wing. An increase in proportion of foreigners in the region could result in more votes for the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. Stable votes of the left-wing by age are a thing of the past. The structurally disadvantage regions have proven to be a persistent left-wing base. In any case, the tendency to change to a populist base can be observed.
