The attitudes of society in late adulthood towards eating disorders

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá stigmatizujícími postoji vůči poruchám příjmu potravy v populaci osob ve starší dospělosti a osob s diagnostikovanou poruchou příjmu potravy neboli sebestigmatizací. Cílem práce je zmapovat strukturu a porovnat míru stigmatizujících postojů obou skupin. Práce je tvořena dvěma částmi, teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretická část se věnuje charakteristice poruch příjmu potravy, jejich rozvoji, průběhu i léčbě a popisu stigmatu, včetně jeho negativních důsledků pro pacienty s poruchou příjmu potravy. Pro praktickou část byla zvolena forma kvantitativního exploračního výzkumu, ve kterém byla zjišťována míra souhlasu se stigmatizujícími prohlášeními a pomocí upravené škály RIBS i míra sociální distance. Výzkumný vzorek byl tvořen 22 osobami s diagnostikovanou poruchou příjmu potravy a 101 osobami bez poruchy příjmu potravy ve starší dospělosti. Faktorovou analýzou byla extrahováno šest komponent, přičemž u osob bez poruchy příjmu potravy ve starší dospělosti byla zjištěna statisticky významná vyšší míra stigmatizujících názorů u proměnných rizikové faktory, stereotyp pacienta a empatie a nižší u proměnné zodpovědnost. Rozdíly v míře sociální distance nebyly statisticky významné.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with stigmatizing attitudes towards eating disorders in the population of individuals in late adulthood and individuals with a diagnosed eating disorder, also known as self-stigmatization. The aim of the thesis is to map the structure and compare the level of stigmatizing attitudes of both groups. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part focuses on the characteristics of eating disorders, their development, course, and treatment, as well as the description of stigma, including its negative consequences for patients with eating disorders. For the practical part, a form of quantitative exploratory research was selected, in which the degree of agreement with stigmatizing statements and the degree of social distance, using an adapted RIBS scale, were assessed. The research sample consisted of 22 individuals with a diagnosed eating disorder and 101 individuals in late adulthood without an eating disorder. Factor analysis extracted six components, with a statistically significant higher degree of stigmatizing attitudes found among individuals without eating disorders in late adulthood, specifically for the variables of risk factors, patient stereotypes, and empathy, and a lower degree for the variable of responsibility. Differences in the degree of social distance were not statistically significant.
