Translation of toponyms in the works of realistic authors of the twentieth cenutry

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse Czech translation of toponyms in the works of French realist authors. The theoretical part is focused on proper names and translation processes, as well as on the history of translation from French to Czech. The practical part is concerned with Czech translations of realistic novels and short stories from periods 1908-1913 and 1950-1957. It is then focused on the translation processes of toponyms from those two periods, present in the works of different translators. Finally, the thesis is devoted to the prominent translation trends of names at that times used by certain translators, and to the differences between them.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat český překlad toponym v dílech francouzských realistů. V teoretické části se zaměřujeme na problematiku vlastních jmen a překladatelských postupů, jakož i na historii překladu z francouzštiny do češtiny. V praktické části jsme zkoumali české překlady realistických románů a povídek z let 1908-1913 a 1950-1957. Soustředili jsme se na postupy překladu místních názvů v těchto obdobích a u jednotlivých překladatelů. Popsali jsme dobové i osobní tendence v překladu těchto názvů a rozdíly mezi nimi.
