Social constructions of work with men with eating disorders in social workers and psychologists

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá sociální konstrukci práce s muži s poruchami příjmu potravy u sociálních pracovníků a psychologů. Zaměřuje se na způsoby, kterými sociální pracovníci a psychologové kategorizují, stereotypizují a idealizují práci s muži s poruchami příjmu potravy. V teoretické části jsou popsány klíčové koncepty sociální konstrukce, kterými je kategorizace, stereotypizace a idealizace. Dále pak poruchy příjmu potravy se zaměřením na muže a faktory, které ovlivňují práci s nimi. Výzkum práce je kvalitativní a byl realizován využitím polostrukturovaného rozhovoru se šesti sociálními pracovníky a šesti psychology/psychoterapeuty v pěti různých zařízeních. Data, která byla získána, jsou interpretována pomocí otevřeného a axiálního kódování. Výzkumem bylo zjištěno, že pomáhající pracovníci konstruují práci s muži s poruchami příjmu potravy velmi podobně jako práci se ženami s poruchami příjmu potravy, tedy že muži mají stejné potřeby jako ženy s tímto onemocněním. Zároveň si však uvědomují zvláštnosti a specifika, která se u mužů s tímto onemocněním objevují – zejména stud a strach ze stigmatizace. V závěru práce je podrobně zodpovězena hlavní výzkumná otázka a také jsou uvedena doporučení pro praxi a další výzkum.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the social construction of the work with men with eating disorders in social workers and psychologists. The focus of this thesis is on ways which social workers and psychologists use for categorising, stereotyping and idealising the work with men with eating disorders. In the theoretical part there is social construction and its key concepts defined. The focus is on categorisation, stereotypisation and idealisation. Then there are eating disorders defined with focus on specifics in men and factors which influence work with them. Research of the thesis is qualitative and it was realized by using of semi-structured interviews with six social workers and six psychologists/psychotherapists in five different organisations. Data which were gained are interpreted by open and axial coding. It was found out that helping care workers construct work with men with eating disorders in very similar way as they construct work with women with eating disorders. At the same time they realize rarities and specifics which occur in men with this disorder – mainly shame and fear of stigma. At the conclusion of the thesis there is detailed answer to the main research question and there are also suggestions for future practise and future research.
