The relationship of self-esteem and health-related behavior

Abstract:

V diplomové práci se zabýváme vztahem sebehodnocení a chování souvisejícího se zdravím. Vzhledem k nedostatku důkazů pro vztah sebehodnocení a jednotlivých proměnných chování poškozujícího zdraví jsme se rozhodli zkoumat chování související se zdravím globálněji a ze všech proměnných chování souvisejícího se zdravím vytvořit faktory a následně typy životního stylu. Výzkum jsme provedli na souboru 376 osob starších 19 let s výrazným podílem studentů Masarykovy univerzity v Brně a Karlovy univerzity v Praze. Nalezli jsme nepříliš těsnou, ale statisticky významnou souvislost mezi sebehodnocením a faktory chování podporujícího zdraví. S faktory chování poškozujícího zdraví souvislost se sebehodnocením nalezena nebyla. Také v souvislosti typů životního stylu se sebehodnocením se statisticky významně odlišoval jen typ s výrazně nižšími hodnotami v jednom z faktorů chování podporujícího zdraví. Typ, který by měl odlišné hodnoty v druhém faktoru, bohužel nebyl k dispozici. Ověřili jsme také souvislost jednotlivých proměnných chování souvisejícího se zdravím s výsledky sebehodnocení. Potvrdili jsme souvislost sebehodnocení s některými proměnnými chování podporujícího zdraví. Souvislost sebehodnocení s proměnnými chování poškozujícího zdraví jsme nenalezli. Celkově výsledky u našeho souboru ukazují, že míra sebehodnocení neměla významnou souvislost s chováním poškozujícím zdraví, měla ale souvislost s chováním podporujícím zdraví. Ověřili jsme také souvislost sebehodnocení a zdraví v posledním roce a souvislost typů životního stylu a zdraví v posledním roce. Nalezli jsme statisticky významnou souvislost mezi sebehodnocením a zdravím v posledním roce, ale nenalezli jsme souvislost mezi typy životního stylu a zdravím v posledním roce.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the relationship of self-esteem and health-related behavior. Due to lack of evidence for the relationship of self-esteem and individual variables of health-compromising behavior we decided to examine health-related behavior in general and infer factors and types of lifestyle from all variables of health-related behavior. We conducted the research on a sample of 376 individuals aged 19 years and older with a large proportion of students of Masaryk university in Brno and Charles university in Prague. We found not a very strong but statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and factors of health-supportive behavior. We did not find a statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and factors of health-compromising behavior. In relationship of self-esteem and types of lifestyle, there was only one significantly different type, with lower values in one of the factors of health-supportive behavior. Unfortunately, the type of lifestyle which would have differ only in the second factor of health-supportive behavior was not available. We also verified the relationship between self-esteem and individual variables of health-related behavior. We confirmed the relationship between self-esteem and some variables of health-supportive behavior. The relationship with variables of health-compromising behavior was not found. In summary, the results of our research suggest that the rate of self-esteem is significantly associated with health-supportive behavior but there is not a relationship between self-esteem and health-compromising behavior. We examined the relationship of self-esteem and health in the last year and types of life-style and health in the last year. We found statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and health in the last year but we did not find relationship between types of lifestyle and health in the last year.
