Coming-of-age: Maturing as a genre.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje filmovému žánru coming-of-age, který tematizuje dospívání. Cílem práce je v její první části vymezit žánr coming-of-age a pojmout jej z hlediska vývoje filmů o dospívání, které jsou v žánrových studiích často nazývány teen nebo youth filmy. Přes stručnou historii žánru a vysvětlení kultu teenagerství práce přejde k vymezení charakteristik žánru coming-of-age jako samostatného žánru, ve kterém dospívání není doprovodný prvek filmu, ale celým jeho těžištěm. Dále práce rozdělí coming-of-age filmy podle věkových kategorií protagonistů a vymezí cílovou skupinu žánru. Praktická část bakalářské práce bude analyzovat tři filmy žánru coming-of-age z různých kulturních prostředí: americký film Osmá třída (2018), venezuelský film Příšerný vlasy (2013) a francouzský film Kočičky (2020). K analýze jsou vybrány čtyři tematické okruhy, které jsou pro vybrané filmy společné: sebe-identita, vztah s rodiči a rebelie, sexualita a romantické zájmy a nová fáze dospělosti. Na základě této „tematické mřížky“ bude práce analyzovat práci s coming-of-age žánrem, ve kterém je stěžejní hrdinova duševní cesta od krize identity ke svému vyspělejšímu já. Na základě poznatků z analýz vytyčuje práce obecnější kritéria, jakými jde s žánrem coming-of-age pracovat, respektive jakým způsobem tematizovat přechod do protagonistovy duševní dospělosti. Práce se zaměřuje zejména na budování postavy dospívajícího protagonisty, je proto určená primárně autorům, které žánr coming-of-age zajímá a chtějí se mu věnovat ve své tvorbě.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis is devoted to the film genre coming-of-age, which thematizes the protagonist’s maturing. First part of this thesis aims to define the coming-of-age genre and understand it from the point of view of the development of films focused on maturing, which are often called teen or youth films in genre studies. Throughout a brief history of the genre and the explanation of the cult of adolescence, the work goes on to define the characteristics of the coming-of-age genre as an independent genre in which adolescence is not an accompanying element of the film, but its entire essence. Furthermore, the thesis divides coming-of-age films according to the protagonists’s age and defines the target audience.The practical part of the bachelor thesis will analyze three films of the coming-of-age genre from different cultural backgrounds: the American film Eighth Grade (2018), the Venezuelan film Bad Hair (2013) and the French film Cuties (2020). Four thematic areas common to the selected films are chosen for the purpose of the analysis: self-identity, relationship with parents and rebellion, sexuality and romantic interests, and the new phase of adulthood. Based on these common themes, the thesis will analyze how the selected films work with the coming-of-age genre, in which the hero's mental journey from their identity crisis to their more mature self is essential. Based on findings from the analysis, the thesis will lay out more general criteria how to work with the coming-of-age genre, or how to thematize the protagonist's transition to mental maturity. The thesis mainly focuses on how to build teenage protagonists and their journey, therefore it is intended primarily for authors who are interested in the coming-of-age genre and who want to devote their work to the coming-of-age genre.
