The Use of Total Physical Response in Teaching English at Primary School

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce nazvaná "Využití Metody Total Physical Response ve Výuce Anglického Jazyka na Prvním Stupni Základní Školy" se zabývá učební metodou česky zvanou "Celková fyzická odezva" (anglicky Total Physical Response, zkratka TPR), která je založená na koordinaci řeči a pohybu. Tato metoda se prosazuje vyučování cizího jazyka pomocí fyzické aktivity. TPR již prokázala, že je velice účinná při výuce začátečníků a mladých žáků, a proto se tato práce orientuje právě na děti z prvního stupně základní školy. Teoretická část této práce popisuje hlavní aspekty výuky cizího jazyka jako takové, uvádí její možné styly a strategie a především se zaměřuje na menší děti a na způsob práce s nimi. Následně tato práce uvádí některé vybrané učební metody pro anglický jazyk a popsuje rozdíly mezi tradičními a moderními učebními metodami. Tyto metody jsou poté zkoumány ve vztahu k TPR. Tato práce také představuje Jamese Ashera, který učební metodu TPR vytvořil, dále historické pozadí TPR a její učební principy. Praktická část této práce se zabývá praktickým užitím TPR a popisuje konkrétní zkušenost s žáky třetích tříd na základní škole v Tišnově. Co se výzkumu v praktické části týče, jedná se o experiment zakončený didaktickým testem.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis called "The Use of Total Physical Response in Teaching English at Primary School" focuses on a teaching method called Total Physical Response (shortly TPR) which is built around the coordination of speech and action. This method has proved to be very successful especially with beginners and lower-level learners, that is why this thesis deals with the primary school pupils. The theoretical part of this diploma thesis describes the main aspects of teaching a foreign language, it presents possible styles and strategies. Mainly, it focuses on young learners of English, it deals with basic principles of teaching them. Later, this thesis describes chosen methods of teaching English as a foreign language and it distinguishes between traditional and modern teaching methods. The methods are examined in relation to Total Physical Response. This diploma thesis presents James Asher, who is the originator of this teaching method, historical background of TPR and its teaching principles. The practical part concentrates on the practical application of TPR and it describes particular experience with the third grade children in the primary school in Tišnov. The research conducted in the practical part appears to be an experiment finished by a didactic test.
