The perception of life meaningfulness in middle adulthood

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na téma životní smysluplnosti v období střední dospělosti. Zabývá se tím, v čem a jak jedinci ve střední dospělosti vnímají smysl živo-ta, a zdroji, ze kterých životní smysluplnosti nabývají. Dále se věnuje přeměně životního smyslu v daném období a životním událostem, které přeměně smyslu přispěly. Práce byla zpracována metodou interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy a data byla sbírána formou polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. Ve všech čtyřech rozhovorech se ukázalo vnímání smyslu života v posouvání se na cestě, generativně nebo naopak stagnaci a v bytí v přítomnosti. Jako významné zdroje v tomto období se ukázaly životní přesvědčení, vztahy, pozitivní prožitky a sebepoznání. Přeměna smyslu se u respondentů projevila v odklonu od materiálního světa či systému, prožíváním svobody a plněním si snů. Životní události ke změně přispívající byly krize, vnímání hrůzy ve světě či vlastní nespokojenost. Všechna témata spolu interagují a navzájem se ovlivňují. Některé výsledky této práce potvrzují výsledky předešlých výzkumných studií, jiné téma doplňují o poznatky nové. Celkové výsledky přibližují prožívání životní smysluplnosti danými jedinci v období střední dospělosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of life meaningfulness in middle adulthood. It examines where and how individuals in middle adulthood perceive meaning in life as well as the sources from which they derive meaning in life. Further, it examines the transformation of life meaning during the period and the life events that contributed to the transformation. The thesis was conducted using the method of interpretive phenomenological analysis and data were collected through semi-structured interview. In all four interviews, the perception of the meaning of life emerged in moving along the journey, generative or conversely in stagnation and in being in the present. Life beliefs, relationships, positive experiences and self-knowledge emerged as significant resources in this period. The respondents' transformation of meaning manifested itself in moving away from the material world or system, experiencing freedom and fulfilling dreams. Life events contributing to the change were crises, perceived affliction in the world or their own dissatisfaction. All these themes interact and influence each other. Some of the results of this thesis confirm the findings of previous research studies, while others add new insights to the themes. The overall results approximate the experience of life meaningfulness by given individuals in middle adulthood.
