The Specifics of Communication with Children with ADHD in Primary School

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice syndromu ADHD v kontextu komunikace mezi učitelem a žákem na 1. stupni ZŠ. Jejím cílem je popsat, jaké komunikační strategie v souvislosti s neklidem u dětí pedagogové používají, jaké způsoby komunikace hodnotí učitelé jako funkční a při práci pomáhající. Práce vychází z poznatků I.Paclta (2007), I.Drtílkové a O.Šerého (2007) a pojetí neklidu J.Prekopové a Ch.Schweitzerové (2008), dále pak z přístupu J.Křivohlavého a J.Mareše (1990) v souvislosti s kompetencemi pedagogů a jejich pedagogickým mistrovstvím. Realizovaný kvalitativní výzkum hledá odpovědi na otázky, jaké jsou postoje k problematice neklidu u dítěte ze strany pedagogů, jaké možnosti využití neverbální komunikace s dětmi s ADHD pedagogové mají, jaká jsou specifika verbální komunikace, jaká je účinnost pochvaly, ocenění a pokárání a jaké jsou funkční mechanismy při komunikaci s dítětem v okamžiku, kdy chápe odlišně nebo učitele nechápe vůbec. Výzkum proběhl jako tematická analýza formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se šesti učitelkami. Výběr respondentek reaguje na téma pedagogického mistrovství a cílem bylo získat odpovědi od vyzrálých pedagogických osobností, jejichž zkušenosti mohou být užitečné pro jiné pedagogy zajímající se o danou problematiku. Analýza umožňuje identifikovat několik oblastí, které jsou pro pedagoga na 1.stupni ZŠ v souvislosti s dítětem s ADHD významné. Poukazuje na pedagožkami vnímanou velkou náročnost a složitost práce s dětmi s ADHD i na potřebu jejich kompetentnosti (např. schopnost vcítit se, potřebu spolupracovat s rodiči nebo schopnost cíleného využívání fyzického a očního kontaktu v komunikaci) a potřebu dokázat budovat s dítětem vztah. Výsledky analýzy nabízejí škálu verbálních a neverbálních komunikačních prostředků, které se respondentkám osvědčují v jejich praxi s dětmi s ADHD i jejich zajímavé postřehy v souvislosti s příčinami neklidu u dětí.

Abstract:

The Bachelor's Diploma Thesis deals with the issue of ADHD syndrome in the context of communication between the teacher and the pupil at the primary school. Its aim was to describe the communication strategies that are used by the children educators in connection with restlessness in children; which ways of communication do the teachers judge as effective and helpful in their work. The work is based on the findings of I.Paclt (2007), I.Drtílková and O.Šerý (2007) and the concept of restlessness according to J.Prekopová and Ch.Schweitzerová (2008). It is further based on the attitude of J.Křivohlavý and J.Mareš (1990) in connection with the competence of teachers and their pedagogical mastery. The qualitative research that has been carried out sought answers to these questions: what are the teachers' approaches to the issue of restlessness in children, what possibilities of using non-verbal communication with children with ADHD do the teachers have, what are the specifics of verbal communication, what is the efficacy of praise, appreciation and rebuke and what are the functional mechanisms in the communication with a child who understands differently or does not understand the teacher at all. The research was conducted through a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with six teachers. The selection of respondents answered to the topic of pedagogical mastery and the goal was to get answers from mature personalities - teachers whose experience can be useful for other educators interested in the issue. The analysis allowed to identify several areas which are signifacant for the teacher at a primary school in connection with a child with ADHD. It pointed to the great demandingness and complexity of work with children with ADHD that the teachers perceive and also the need for their competence(eg. empathy, the need to cooperate with parents, or the ability to consciously use physical contact and eye contact in communication) and the need to be able to build a relationship with the child. The results of the analysis offer a variety of verbal and non-verbal means of communication, which have been proved efficient in the respondents' work with children with ADHD, and also the interesting observations of the respondents in relation to the causes of restlessness in children.
