Markers of Developmental Stress on the Skull Base

Abstract:

The height of the skull base is an indicator of developmental stress, as it can be reduced by the action of prenatal stress factors. This flattening is called platybasis and it can have a negative impact on an individual's life. Two procedures were chosen to evaluate the height of the base of the skull. A coordinate gauge was used to measure the height and width of the base. For analysis of size and shape geometric morphometry was used. A sample of 132 individuals was analyzed. We found that the height of the skull base differs between the sexes (M = 20.12 mm; W = 18.32 mm) and between historical periods. Its average height in individuals from 9th–10th century is 19.73 mm. The average of height of the skull base in individuals of the 11th century is 22.43 mm. In individuals of 13th–16th century it is 17.18 mm and in individuals of 18th–19th century it is 17.64 mm. Testing the dependence of the height of the cranial base on life expectancy yielded the expected results, especially if we tested the relationship between the life expectancy factor and the historical period. The results confirmed that this indicator is suitable for analyzing living conditions if we deal with chronic stress caused by, for example, inadequate nutrition or diseases.

Výška báze lební je ukazatelem vývinového stresu, kdy vlivem působení prenatálních stresových faktorů může docházet k jejímu snižování. Toto zplošťování se označuje jako platybázie a může mít negativní dopad na život jedince. K hodnocení výšky báze lební byly zvoleny dva postupy. K měření výšky a šířky báze lební bylo použito koordinátové měřidlo. K analýze velikosti a tvaru báze byla využita pak geometrická morfometrie. Analyzován byl soubor lebek 132 jedinců z několika historických období. Zjistili jsme, že výška báze lební se liší mezi pohlavími (M = 20,12 mm; Ž = 18,32 mm) i mezi historickými obdobími. Její průměrná výška je u jedinců z 9.–10. století 19,73 mm, u jedinců 11. století je 22,43 mm, u jedinců 13.–16. století je 17,18 mm a u jedinců 18.–19. století je 17,64 mm. Testování závislosti výšky báze lební na věku dožití přineslo očekávané výsledky, zejména pak v případě, kdy jsme testovali vztah faktoru dožití věku a historického období. Výsledky nám však potvrdily, že tato výška je vhodným ukazatelem životních podmínek, pokud se zabýváme chronickým stresem způsobeným například neadekvátní výživou či onemocněními.
