Budhism in selectected Czech print media: discousive analysis

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci jsme se zaměřili na způsob, jakým byl ve vybraném výzkumném souboru fotograficky prezentován „diskurz tibetského buddhismu“ v českých médiích v roce 2006. Samotným předmětem analýzy se stala fotografická reprezentace doprovázející články, kterou jsme zkoumali optikou analýzy diskurzů s cílem nalézt procesy, principy a pravidla daných diskurzivní formací. Stať se nesnaží jen kategorizovat výpovědi, ale zobrazit způsob, jakým média postupovala při konstrukci obrazu buddhismu a buddhistů s ohledem na strategie, technologie a rutiny výroby. Práce tak reflektuje editoriální postupy a rutiny při tvorbě obrazu tibetského buddhismu, konstrukční a skryté významy, které jsou do obrazu zakódovány, ideologické a mocenské tendence, jež se objevují při střetu západního a východního diskurzu. Tématem i metodologickým zpracováním práce vyplňuje mezeru v oblasti bádání o mediální konstrukci buddhistického náboženského systému v českém prostředí, a upozorňuje tak na jeho existenci a tím pádem relevanci.

Abstract:

In the present diploma thesis, we focused on the ways the Czech media presented a “Tibetan Buddhist discourse” by means of photographs in a selected research set of articles published in 2006. The analysis itself concentrated on the photographic representation that accompanied given articles, which we examined from the point of view of discourses, aiming at finding processes, principles and rules for given discoursive formations. The essay does not strive for a mere categorisation of utterances, but also for a presentation of methods applied by the media in the portrayal of Buddhism and Buddhists in relation to the strategies, technologies and routines of production. Thus, the thesis reflects the editorial procedures and routines involved in the creation of a picture of Tibetan Buddhism, the constructional and hidden meanings encoded in the picture, ideological and power tendencies appearing within the conflict of the Western and Eastern discourses. By its topic and methodology applied, the present thesis fills in a gap in the research area of media construction around the Buddhist religious system in the Czech environment, thus drawing attention to its existence and relevance as well.
