Anger management from a perspective of children in the first and second grade of the elementary school

Abstract:

Cílem tohoto kvalitativního výzkumu bylo zjistit, jaké strategie ke zvládnutí hněvu jsou schopny popsat děti v prvním a druhém ročníku základní školy. Děti byly dotazovány na konkrétní situace, kdy zažily hněv a co jim tehdy pomohlo, aby se cítily lépe. Reflexi jejich zkušeností s hněvem jim usnadňoval podnětový materiál, od kterého se odvíjel polostrukturovaný rozhovor. Pomocí tematické analýzy třiceti šesti rozhovorů s jednotlivými dětmi bylo identifikováno jedenáct strategií zvládání hněvu. Téma „odpočinek“ obsahovalo ještě subtémata „spánek“ a „izolace od lidí“, podobně téma „zaměření pozornosti jinam“ zahrnovalo „aktivitu“, „změnu zaměření myšlenek“ a „ignoraci“. „Vyhledání pomoci rodičů“ se vyskytovalo ve dvou podobách, a to „s cílem získání praktické pomoci“ a „s cílem fyzické blízkosti“. Dalšími popsanými strategiemi jsou „odplata“, „komunikace s druhým aktérem“, „dosažení požadovaného stavu“ a „koncentrace na fyziologické potřeby“. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu poznatků o vývojovém období mladšího školního věku, především v souvislosti se způsoby exprese hněvu a s teorií citové vazby. Nastíněny jsou i možnosti dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

The aim of this qualitative research was to find out what coping strategies of anger do children use. The children in the first and second year of primary school were asked to describe specific situations when they experienced anger and what helped them to feel better. A stimulus material was used to help them with a reflection of their experience. Thematic analysis of thirty-six semi-structured individual interviews led to identification of eleven anger coping strategies. The theme "rest" included subthemes "sleep" and "isolation from people". Similarly, the theme "focusing on something else" contained "activity", "change of mindset" and "ignorance." "Seeking help of parents" was identified in two forms: "with the purpose of getting practical help" and "with the goal of physical proximity". Other strategies described in the study are "revenge", "communicating with the other participant in the conflict", "achieving the desired state" and "concentrating on physiological needs". The results were discussed in the context of current knowledge of middle childhood, especially in relation to the ways of anger expression and to the attachment theory. Furthermore, the work outlined possible directions for further research.
