Support of reflection on teaching practice in teacher education

Abstract:

Dizertační práce se zabývá podporou reflexe praxe v učitelském vzdělávání. Tato práce se zaměřuje na přímou podporu reflexe, tj. činnost vzdělavatele, v rámci které podněcuje studentovu reflexi v bezprostřední verbální interakci. Analýza literatury ukázala, že málo rozumíme tomu, jak je podpora reflexe samotnými aktéry vnímána. Hlavním cílem dizertační práce bylo proto zjistit, jak studenti učitelství, jejich vzdělavatelé a vzdělavatelé vzdělavatelů uvažují o podpoře reflexe praxe probíhající v reflektivních seminářích. Výzkum byl realizován s pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy nestrukturovaných hloubkových rozhovorů a ohniskových skupin a s pomocí analýzy videozáznamů s využitím metodologie self-study. Ukázalo se, že úspěšná podpora reflexe praxe vyžaduje alternativní paradigma výuky, s čímž se těžko vyrovnávali studenti i vyučující. Studenti konfrontovali svá přesvědčení a zažitý způsob jednání s ustavovaným alternativním výukovým paradigmatem, spíše než aby reflektovali, a vzdělavatelé studenty tímto procesem provázeli, spíše než aby podporovali jejich reflexi. Výzkum dále odhalil dovednosti důležité pro podporu reflexe, které dříve nebyly popsány (provázení studentů vzdělávacími obsahy; re-distribuování moci a odpovědnosti ve výuce; hodnocení kvality reflexe, vlastního výkonu a výkonu studentů). Výzkum dále potvrdil nezbytnost orientovat se při podpoře reflexe jak na proces, tak na obsah studentovy reflexe, identifikoval vliv institucionálního kontextu na úspěšnost podpory reflexe a poukázal na nezbytnost dalšího profesního rozvoje vzdělavatelů. V odborné literatuře je poukazováno také na nedostatečnou pozornost k celostně uchopované reflexi. Sekundárním cílem dizertační práce proto bylo zjistit, jak lze podporovat reflexi praxe studentů učitelství s ohledem na kognitivní i vtělený mód reflexe. Využívání obou reflektivních módů umožňuje člověku zpracovávat jak zcela uvědomované (explicitní), tak méně uvědomované (tacitní) aspekty zkušenosti. Pro dosažení sekundárního cíle byla zvolena metodologie případové studie, konkrétně, šlo o analýzu nestrukturovaných hloubkových rozhovorů s vybranou studentkou učitelství. Analyzovány byly projevy méně uvědomovaných aspektů zkušenosti (projevy tacitních znalostí) v metaforách studentky, protože právě v metaforách byl už dříve identifikován potenciál uchopovat i skryté aspekty zkušenosti. Byly popsány 4 způsoby, jakými se tacitní znalosti v metaforách studentky učitelství projevují. Ukázalo se, že „metaforická krajina“, na níž jsou tacitní znalosti navázány, má dynamický charakter a záměrnou reflexí ji lze ovlivňovat a re-konstruovat. Na základě těchto zjištění byl rozvinut existující model profesního rozvoje, který zohledňuje při učení jak uvědomované, tak i méně uvědomované aspekty zkušenosti – model založený na reflexi tří znalostních úrovní (gestalt – schéma – teorie) rozvíjený F. Korthagenem a jeho kolegy. Ilustroval jsem, že potenciál tohoto modelu lze zvýšit, pokud k uchopování zkušenosti pomocí metafor dochází nejen při vtěleném módu reflexe (na úrovni gestaltu), ale částečně také při kognitivním módu reflexe (na úrovni schématu a teorie).

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with the support of reflection on teaching practice in teacher education. This thesis focuses on the direct support of reflection, i.e. the activity of the educator as he or she stimulates the students’ reflection through direct verbal interaction. Analysis of the literature has shown that we lack understanding of how support of reflection is perceived by the participants themselves. The main goal of the dissertation was to find out what student teachers, their educators, and educators of the educators think about the support of reflection on the teaching practice taking place in reflective seminars. The research was carried out with the help of an interpretative phenomenological analysis of unstructured in-depth interviews and focus groups and with the help of analysis of video using self-study methodology. It was discovered that successful support of reflection on teaching practice required an alternative paradigm of teaching, which was difficult for students and teachers to cope with. The students had to face their beliefs and deep-rooted way of behaving with the established alternative educational paradigm rather than reflecting, and the educators accompanied the students in this process rather than supporting their reflection. The research also uncovered important skills for the support of reflection which had not previously been described (guiding students through educational content, re-distributing power and responsibility in teaching, assessing the quality of reflection, one’s own and students’ performance). The research furthermore confirmed the need to focus in the support of reflection both on the process and on the content of the students’ reflection, it identified the influence of the institutional context on the success of the support of reflection and it pointed to the necessity for further professional development of educators. In the literature, the lack of attention paid to holistic reflection is also pointed out. The secondary aim of the dissertation was to find out how to support reflection on trainee teachers’ teaching practice with regard to the cognitive and embodied modes of reflection. The use of both reflective modes allows for both fully conscious (explicit) and less conscious (tacit) aspects of experience to be processed. In order to achieve the secondary goal, the case study methodology was chosen, namely, analysis of unstructured in-depth interviews with a selected student teacher. The less conscious aspects of experience (tacit knowledge) were analysed in the metaphors of the student, because in metaphors the potential to grasp the hidden aspects of the experience had already been identified. 4 ways in which tacit knowledge is shown in student teachers’ metaphors were described. It was shown that the "metaphorical landscape" on which tacit knowledge is established has a dynamic character and through deliberate reflection it can be influenced and re-designed. Based on these findings, an existing model of professional development has been developed, taking into account both the conscious and the less conscious aspects of experience - a model based on reflection at three levels of knowledge (gestalt - scheme - theory) developed by F. Korthagen and his colleagues. I have illustrated that the potential of this model can be increased if experience is grasped with the help of metaphors not only in the embodied mode of reflection (gestalt level), but also partly in the cognitive mode of reflection (at the schematic and theoretical levels).
