Posttraumatic growth in people caring for children with a psychiatric diagnosis

Abstract:

Život s dítětem, které se nevyvíjí zcela běžným způsobem, je poměrně často spojován s traumatizací pečujících osob. Většina rodičů si přeje, aby jejich dítě bylo zdravé a naplnilo veškeré jejich představy budoucnosti. I přes to, že pro většinu osob je tato situace traumatická, tak jsou schopni prožít posttraumatický růst. Práce se věnuje posttraumatickému rozvoji u pečujících osob o děti s psychiatrickou diagnózou a částečně také tomu, v jakých oblastech rodiče těchto dětí posttraumatický rozvoj pociťují, a také se věnuje oblastem, jež jim dopomohly prožít fenomén posttraumatického rozvoje. V empirické části je analýza výpovědí pěti participantů, z toho jsou čtyři ženy a jeden muž. Výzkumnou metodou je polostrukturovaný rozhovor, který je následně analyzován pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Posttraumatický rozvoj prožili téměř všichni participanti, avšak jedna probandka si subjektivně myslí, že tento rozvoj neprožila. Posttraumatický rozvoj se týkal několika oblastí, ať už šlo o změnu vnímání vlastního já, změnu vztahů k druhým lidem nebo také změnu v chápání života. U některých participantů se taktéž změnila spirituální zaměřenost. Posttraumatický rozvoj je značně individuálního charakteru, přestože tento fenomén rodiče prožijí, tak i nadále prožívají stres z těžkostí, které se pojí s psychiatrickou diagnózou jejich dětí a nedostatkem pomoci, která se jim nedostává.

Abstract:

Living with a child who does not develop in a completely normal way is quite often associated with traumatization of the caregivers. Most parents want their child to be healthy and to fulfil all their ideas for the future. Despite the fact that the situation is traumatic for most people, they are able to experience post-traumatic growth. This thesis explores posttraumatic development in caregivers of children with psychiatric diagnoses and, in part, the areas in which parents of these children experience posttraumatic development, as well as the areas that helped them experience the phenomenon of posttraumatic development. The empirical section analyses the accounts of five participants, four of whom are female and one male. The research method is a semi-structured interview, which is then analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Almost all participants experienced post-traumatic development, but one proband subjectively thinks that she did not experience this development. Posttraumatic development was related to several areas, whether it was a change in the perception of self, a change in relationships with other people or also a change in the understanding of life. For some participants there was also a change in spiritual orientation. Post-traumatic development is highly individual in nature, although parents experience this phenomenon, they continue to experience the stress of the difficulties associated with their children's psychiatric diagnosis and the lack of help they receive.
