Czech Illustrations in the Literature for Children and Young People. Resource, Progression’s Aspects, Expressive’s Trends

Anotácia:

Předkládaná disertační práce nazvaná Česká ilustrace v literatuře pro děti a mládež. Východiska, vývojové aspekty, výrazné tendence popisuje stav, historických determinantů a s tím souvisejících problémů ilustrace v české literární tvorbě pro děti a mládež v současnosti, ovšem s ohledem na podstatné tendence minulých desetiletí a 20. století jako celku. Autor zpracovává vybrané oblasti s metodologickým důrazem na umělecko/literárně-kritické a umělecko/literárně-historické postupy. Výsledný pohled je budován interpretací podstatných jevů, konotačních jevů, ale i skrze hlubší analýzu určujících osobností a děl v rámci výtvarného dění a národního písemnictví pro mládež, přičemž výběr tvůrců zasahuje jak osobnosti z oblasti výhradní tvorby výtvarné – ilustrační, tak autory působící jako literáti i ilustrátoři.

Abstract:

The author examines selected essential fields of illustrations in Czech literature for children and youth from the point of view of artistic-critical and literary-critical reflections, from the perspective of art and literature history as well as in general context of aesthetics and history of art. The introductory text deals with the relation of illustrations and objectives and possibilities of the school subject “art education “. The next chapter describes the aesthetic definition of the phenomenon of illustration. Philosophical concepts of the illustration are at the core of the final theoretical chapter entitled Philosophical aspects of children’s book illustrations. Art-historical issues and those of the theory of literature are treated in following chapters. The section Starting points, roots, inspiration examines the influence of tradition and evolution of the illustration in the 20th century on the world of illustration in the beginning of this century. In the chapter on an important phenomenon of the mid-20th century called Folksiness and tradition on the way towards an authentic transformation, the roots of the conservative illustration stream followed in the authentic authorial approach observed in the work of Josef Lada are discussed. The issues of the second half of the 20th century are dealt with in the chapters Way to openness – application of the principle of free author’s expression and Unity of poetics of artistic and literary creation. The chapter Peripheral aesthetics on the way towards a general acceptation is dedicated to the inclusion of once ephemeral literary works and their illustrations into the generally accepted aesthetic code determining the aesthetic perception of several generations. The chapter Defence of openness – playfulness as artisticaesthetic correlative describes the application of the free artistic expression in the domain of illustration and its codification connected to creative principles of the building up a pictorial object, mainly in the work of Květa Pacovská. The chapter Present – tendencies, styles and possibilities surveys the most interesting illustrations in Czech children’s books since the beginning of this century. Further discussed are the connection of comics and book illustrations (From comics towards the illustration), narrative expression with instrumental elements (Non/returns and non/tradition), the strong stream of artistic expression in authorial books including cutting off from the aesthetic-formal role of the illustration (Artificial balancing) and drawing on primitive and naive expression and aesthetic qualities of children’s drawing and painting (Animality and authenticity).
