Insecurities in motherhood and their connections to mothers’ mental well-being

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo popsat obsah nejistot, které zažívají matky batolat ve věku 13-17 měsíců (N= 90), a začlenit je do kontextu prožívání matek. Hlavními teoretickými východisky byla současná podoba ideálu mateřství a rodičovské vědomí vlastní účinnosti. Za použití obsahové analýzy polostrukturovaných rozhovorů získaných v rámci studie "Yummy mummy" ideál a skutečnost: Od rozdílů v osobnosti matek a způsobu péče o děti k batolecímu vývoji a citové vazbě bylo nalezeno pět obecných kategorií mateřských nejistot – Naplňování fyzických potřeb, Rozvíjení dítěte, Řešení aktuálních výchovných otázek, Cílevědomost ve výchově a Charakteristiky a situace matky. Výskyt těchto kategorií byl poté dán do souvislosti s dotazníkovými daty z projektu DOMOV (Děti, otcové a matky o vývoji) o duševní pohodě – o míře depresivity, úzkosti a stresu – a také o rodičovském vědomí vlastní účinnosti. Ve výsledném regresním modelu však nejistoty nebyly statisticky významným prediktorem duševní pohody. Explorací dat bylo zjištěno, že skupiny matek s výskytem některých obecných kategorií nejistot (Rozvíjení dítěte a Charakteristiky a situace matky) dosahovaly vyšší průměrné depresivity, úzkosti i stresu. Tato zjištění byla porovnána s dosavadními poznatky v oblasti prožívání a sebehodnocení matek a byly navrženy další způsoby zkoumání mateřských nejistot.

Abstract:

This thesis aimed to describe the content of insecurities experienced by mothers of 13-17 month old toddlers (N= 90) and to place them in context of the experience of motherhood. The theoretical background consisted mainly of contemporary ideals of motherhood and parental self-efficacy. Five general categories of maternal insecurities (Fullfilment of physical needs, Development of childrens‘ skills, Resolving present issues with upbringing, Purposefulness of upbringing, Mothers‘ charac-teristics and situation) were found using content analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted as a part of the Yummy mummy research project. Occurence of these categories was then related to survey data on mental well-being – depression, anxiety and stress – and on parental self-efficacy acquired by the DOMOV research project. Insecu-rities did not appear to serve as a significant predictor of mental well-being in the final linear regression model. An exploration of the data found that groups of mothers who had reported insecurities in the categories Development of childrens‘ skills and Mothers‘ characteristics and situation had higher mean scores of depression, anxiety and stress. These results were then compared with current knowledge on the subject of maternal experiences and parental self-efficacy beliefs. New approaches to studying maternal insecurities were proposed.
