Surrogate mothers' experience with child-centered filial therapy

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to figure out the character of the experience of surrogate mothers with the process of filial therapy. The character of relationship problems of mother-child dyads which had undergone this non-directive approach of play therapy is viewed from the prespective of the attachment theory in the introduction. Five foster mothers in the age of 34 to 43 took part in this research. The main part of the investigation of the problem was the interpretative phenomenological analysis while especially significant relationships, events and personal characteristics were chosen from the wide range of phenomena which were connected with the perception of the process. Validity of the research was secured by methodological triangulation of additionally administered methods of Exner Rorschach (with the Mutuality of Autonomy scale focused on object relations) and Secure Base Script Test. The results are presented in a form of five case studies which are further discussed in connection with the findings from the projective methods. In every case, a surprisingly variable network of relations and internal settings that were significantly connected with the perception of the therapy was found, although mostly in a negative way. An important common subject of surrogate mothers in the perception of filial therapy was the mental detachment from the children while playing in therapy but also off sessions. The other significant subject of mothers were the problems of self-worth in connection with the perception of the video camera in the room which, in the end, can limit the positive outcomes of the therapy. Also the complementarity of relationships in the way of control and dominance in a couple was found, where the controlling mothers had children with problems of submission and pliancy and on the other hand, more submissive mothers had problems with displays of agression and control over the children. The findings are connected with surrogate mothers being overburdened by their internal demands or by their own internalized experience with important people and are discussed from the prespective of the attachment theory.

Abstract:

Cieľom práce bolo zistiť charakter skúseností náhradných matiek s procesom filiálnej terapie. Na povahu vzťahových problémov dvojíc matiek s dieťaťom, ktoré tento nedirektívny prístup terapie hrou podstúpili, je v úvode nazerané z perspektívy teórie citovej väzby. Na výskume participovalo 5 náhradných matiek vo veku od 34 do 43 rokov. Jadrom skúmania problému bola interpretavívna fenomenologická analýza, pričom zo širokého okruhu fenoménov vyplývajúcich z rozboru rozhovorov boli vybrané najmä významné vzťahové témy, udalosti a osobnostné črty, ktoré s vnímaním procesu terapie súviseli. Validita výskumu bola zabezpečená metodologickou trianguláciou dodatočne administrovanými metódami Exner Rorschach (so subškálou Mutuality of Autonomy zameranou na objektové vzťahy) a Secure Base Script Test. Výsledky majú formu piatich kazuistík, ktoré sú ďalej diskutované v spojitosti so zisteniami z projektívnych metód. V každom z prípadov sa rozvinula prekvapivo pestrá sieť vzťahov a vnútorných nastavení, ktoré s vnímaním terapie významne súviseli, väčšinov však v negatívnom duchu. Dôležitou spoločnou témou náhradných matiek vo vnímaní filiálnej terapie bolo mentálne odpájanie sa od detí pri hre počas terapie, ale aj mimo nej. Ďalšou významnou témou matiek boli problémy sebahodnoty v spojitosti s vnímaním kamery v miestnosti, ktoré môžu v konečnom dôsledku obmedziť pozitívne výstupy z terapie. Zaujímavým zistením je tiež vzťahová komplementarita v zmysle kontroly a dominancie v rámci dvojice, kedy kontrolujúce matky mali deti s problémami submisivity a poddajnosti, naopak submisívnejšie matky mali problémy s agresívnymi prejavmi a kontrolou detí. Zistenia súvisia s preťaženosťou náhradných matiek ich vnútornými nárokmi, alebo s ich vlastnými zvnútornenenými skúsenosťami s významnými ľuďmi a sú diskutované z perspektívy teórie citovej väzby.
