Impacts of the Euro adoption on inbound tourism in the Republic of Malta

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá dopady zavedení eura na příjezdový cestovní ruch v Maltské republice. V literární rešerši je vymezen příjezdový cestovní ruch, jeho význam ve světě a faktory, které ho ovlivňují. Další kapitola uvádí jak zavedení eura muže působit na cestovní ruch. V této části je též popsáno o struktuře maltského hospodářství, vývoji HDP, míře inflace a nezaměstnanosti. Empirická část se nejprve zaměřuje na charakteristiku příjezdového cestovního ruchu v Maltské republice. Další kapitoly se věnují analýze příjezdů s důrazem na změny v teritoriální struktuře. Pro posuzování euro efektu je využito metodu Benchmark. Metoda je založena na komparaci vybraných ukazatelů v Maltské republice s benchmarkovou skupinou (hlavně před a po roce 2008). K benchmarkové skupině patří pobaltské státy (Litva, Lotyšsko, Estonsko), Česká republika a Maďarsko. Sledovanými proměnnými jsou poměr příjezdů ze zemí eurozóny k počtu obyvatel, celkový vliv turismu na HDP a zaměstnanost. Na základě provedených analýz bylo prokázáno pozitivní vliv zavedení eura na příjezdový cestovní ruch v Maltské republice.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the impacts of the euro adoption on inbound tourism in the Republic of Malta. The literature research delineates inbound tourism, its importance in the world and the factors that influence it. The next chapter presents how euro adoption can affect tourism. This part also describes the structure of the Maltese economy, the development of GDP, the rate of inflation and unemployment. The empirical part first focuses on the characteristics of inbound tourism in the Republic of Malta. The next chapters are devoted to the analysis of arrivals with an emphasis on changes in the territorial structure. The benchmark method is used to assess the euro effect in Malta. The method is based on a comparison of selected indicators with the benchmark group (mainly before and after 2008). The benchmark group includes the Baltic states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia), the Czech Republic and Hungary. The variables monitored are arrivals from the eurozone members to the population, the total contribution of tourism to GDP and to employment. Based on the analyses carried out, the positive impact of the euro adoption on inbound tourism in the Republic of Malta has been demonstrated.
