The use of The Beatles’ songs in English language teaching with a focus on collocations at A2 - B1 level

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je ověřit užitečnost využití písní skupiny The Beatles ve výuce anglického jazyka se zaměřením na vybrané kolokace. Písně jsou zdrojem bohatého jazyka a jejich výhodou je, že jsou snadno dostupné učitelům a zároveň okamžitě motivují většinu studentů. Pro demonstraci možného přístupu k využití písní v hodinách angličtiny jsem použila následující čtyři písně: She’s leaving home, Oh! Darling, Nowhere Man a I’m happy just to dance with you. V rámci pedagogické praxe jsem uskutečnila tři vyučovací hodiny zaměřené na využití těchto písní. Popis hodin je spolu s jejich hodnocením součástí praktické části práce. Vhodným využitím písní v hodině cizího jazyka lze nejen zpestřit výuku a obohatit znalosti studentů, ale také motivovat studenty do budoucího studia, což je jeden z nejdůležitějších úkolů učitele v rámci výuky skrze písně. Užitečnost písní jsem ověřila pomocí dotazníku, který jsem pro své studenty vytvořila.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explore the benefits of using The Beatles’ songs in English language teaching with a focus on selected collocations. Songs are a source of varied language and the advantage of musical materials is that they are so readily available to the teacher, and so immediately motivational to most students. To demonstrate a possible approach of using songs in the classroom, I have chosen the following four songs: She’s leaving home, Oh! Darling, Nowhere Man and I’m happy just to dance with you. I have taught three English lessons based on the songs. The practical part of this thesis includes their description and evaluation. Appropriate use of songs in foreign language lessons can extend students’ knowledge and can make language study more varied. It also motivates students for further study, which is one of the most important teacher roles in learning English through songs. I have assessed the benefits of using songs by giving my students a questionnaire, which I constructed for them.
