Locus of control over the relationship as a mediator of the link between dyadic perfectionism and fear of emotional intimacy

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá souvislostmi mezi třemi konstrukty (dyadický perfekcionismus, atribuce zodpovědnosti a kontroly nad vztahem, strach z intimity) v rámci procesu sdílení emocí a myšlenek mezi intimními partnery. Cílem bylo testovat model, v němž atribuce kontroly nad vztahem mediuje souvislost mezi dimenzemi dyadického perfekcionismu (perfekcionismus orientovaný na partnera a perfekcionismus připisovaný partnerovi) a strachem ze sdílení pocitů a myšlenek s partnerem (z intimity). Pro testování modelu byly užity kvantitativní parametrické metody – lineární regrese a vícečetná lineární regrese. Velikost účinku pro mediační efekt byla stanovena pomocí Aroianovy verze Sobelova testu a ověřena neparametrickou bootstrappingovou metodou (B = 5000). Zkoumaný soubor respondentů sestával ze 102 párů (39 sezdaných, 63 nesezdaných), které žily v době výzkumu ve společné domácnosti. Výsledky studie potvrzují pouze část hypotéz. Konkrétně, nepřímý efekt perfekcionismu připisovaného partnerovi na strach z intimity (skrze atribuci kontroly nad vztahem) je statisticky signifikantní pouze u mužů. Co do velikosti účinku se jedná o slabý až středně silný efekt. U žen nebyla potvrzena ani jedna z mediačních hypotéz, ačkoli oba typy dyadického perfekcionismu (perfekcionismus připisovaný partnerovi i perfekcionismus orientovaný na partnera) statisticky signifikantně predikovaly míru jejich strachu z intimity. Atribuce kontroly nad vztahem byla nejsilnějším prediktorem strachu z intimity u žen i u mužů, a to i po kontrole na perfekcionismus připisovaný partnerovi. Jednotlivá zjištění spolu s doporučením pro další výzkum jsou okomentovány v diskusi.

Abstract:

This work deals with the relationship between the three constructs (dyadic perfectionism , locus of control over the relationship, fear of intimacy) in the process of sharing emotions and thoughts between intimate partners. The aim was to test the model in which the locus of control over the relationship mediates the relationship between dyadic relationship between dimensions of perfectionism (partner -oriented perfectionism and perfectionism attributable partner) and fear of sharing feelings and thoughts with a partner (of intimacy). To test the model were used quantitative parametric methods - linear regression and multiple linear regression. An effect size for mediation effect was determined using Aroian version of Sobel test and verified using bootstrapping nonparametric method (B = 5000). The sample of respondents consisted of 102 pairs (39 married , 63 unmarried) who lived in the time of the research in the same household. The study results confirm only part of the hypotheses. Specifically, the indirect effect attributed to perfectionism partner for fear of intimacy (through attribution of responsibility and control over the relationship) is statistically significant only for men. As for the magnitude of the effect is a weak to moderate effect. In women has not been established, neither of mediation hypothesis, although both types of dyadic perfectionism (perfectionism attributable partner and partner - oriented perfectionism) statistically significantly predicted the degree of their fear of intimacy. Locus of control over the relationship was the strongest predictor of fear of intimacy with both women and men, even after controlling for perfectionism attributable to the partner. Individual findings, along with recommendations for further research are commented in the discussion section.
