Fundamental and technical analysis of prices of selected precious metals

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zpracováním vybraných metod fundamentální a technické analýzy a jejich následnou aplikací na cenové kurzy drahých kovů. Konkrétně se jedná o zlato, stříbro, platinu a palladium. Práce se nejprve věnuje teoretické charakteristice trhu s vybranými drahými kovy. Na teoretický základ navazuje další část zabývající se fundamentální analýzou. V rámci fundamentální analýzy jsou nejprve popsány její samotné principy a následně je provedena kointegrační analýza mezi časovými řadami vývoje spotových cen drahých kovů a vybraných ekonomických faktorů. Poslední část je věnována technické analýze, v rámci které jsou nejprve zkonstruovány dva trendové a dva cenové indikátory. Ty jsou dále aplikovány na časové řady vývoje cenových kurzů futures kontraktů příslušných drahých kovů a vyhodnoceny jako samostatné triviální investiční strategie. Technická analýza je zakončena modelací sofistikovanějšího obchodního systému, který představuje kombinaci dříve analyzovaných indikátorů. Struktura aplikace a vyhodnocení obchodního systému je totožná s triviálními strategiemi. V závěru práce jsou shrnuty výstupy obou analýz.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the elaboration of selected methods of fundamental and technical analysis and their subsequent application to precious metal prices. Specifically, it concerns gold, silver, platinum and palladium. The thesis first deals with the theoretical characteristics of the market of selected precious metals. The theoretical basis is followed by another section dealing with fundamental analysis. Within the framework of fundamental analysis, its principles are first described and then a cointegration analysis between the time series of spot prices of precious metals and selected economic factors is performed. The last section is devoted to technical analysis, in which two trend and two price indicators are first constructed. These are then applied to time series of price movements of futures contracts of the respective precious metals and evaluated as separate trivial investment strategies. The technical analysis concludes with the modelling of a more sophisticated trading system, which is a combination of the previously analysed indicators. The structure of the application and evaluation of the trading system is identical to the trivial strategies. The paper concludes with a summary of the results of both analyses.
