Settlement of Lower Thaya during the Late Iron Age

Abstract:

V mé magisterské diplomové práci se snažím charakterizovat laténskou sídelní strategii v prostoru dolního Podyjí, který jsem rozšířil na celé Břeclavsko. Zaměřuji se na dynamiku osídlení v jednotlivých periodizačních stupních doby laténské pomocí GIS analýzy nadmořské výšky, lokálního převýšení, svažitosti terénu a orientace svahů. Pozornost věnuji i vztahu kvality půd nebo hodnotám TWI (míra zavodnění) vůči preferovaným sídlištním polohám. V úvahu beru i vzdálenosti sídlišť k nejbližším zdrojům vody, dle modelované vodní sítě v prostředí GIS, vektorizované vodní sítě dle historickým mapových podkladů a současné vodní síti. Zjištěný charakter sídelní strategie na Břeclavsku a jeho změny se snažím porovnat s dalšími regiony s laténským osídlením (střední Morava, slovenský Zohor, Dolní Rakousko), kdy je specifická pozornost věnována změnám, které nastávají při nástupu periodizačního stupně LT C LT D (vylidnění říčních koridorů, redukce osídlení, preference vyšších poloh atd.). Dále se zaměřuji na možnou interpretaci zjištěných změn v sídelní strategii a potenciální důvody, které k těmto změnám vedly. V práci také věnuji pozornost prostorové distribuci vybraných archeologických pramenů (např. otázce využití shluků bodů při predikci umístění potenciální centrální lokality na Břeclavsku).

Abstract:

In the thesis I am trying to describe La Tène settlement strategy in the Břeclav region. I am focusing on the settlement dynamics in individual phases of the La Tène period using GIS analyses of altitude, local altitude differences, terrain sloping and orientation towards the four cardinal directions. I am also paying attention to the relationship between soil types occurrence or TWI levels (Topographic Wetness Index) with preferred settlement placements. I am taking into consideration the distance between settlements to the nearest water source, which is represented by the water network GIS model, digitalized water network based on historical map resources and current water network. Researched settlement strategy and its dynamics are further compared to other regions with La Tène culture presence (central Moravia, south-western Slovakia, Lower Austria), while special attention is paid to the changes taking place in during LT C and LT D period (abandonment of river corridors, depopulation, higher altitude settlement placement etc.). Possible interpretations of discovered settlement strategy dynamics as well as potential causes triggering settlement changes are suggested. In my thesis I am also studying spatial distribution of various artefacts and new information stemming from the results (e.g. using point cluster detection in the prediction of the new central settlement in the Thaya region).
