The theme of death in the caring profession in homes for the elderly

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce si klade za cíl zmapování tématu smrti v profesi pečovatele v domovech pro seniory. Konkrétně pak zjistit, jaké postoje ke smrti pečovatelé zastávají, jakým způsobem se se smrtí při výkonu své profese setkávají a pak také, jaká témata se vyskytují při komunikaci o smrti s klienty. Pro zjištění postojů jsme použili dotazník DAP-R a zjistili jsme, že nejčastěji se vyskytujícím postojem ke smrti mezi pečovateli je postoj vyhýbavý, který je následován strachem ze smrti a vstřícným přijetím smrti. Pro exploraci tématu smrti v profesi pečovatele jsme použili polostrukturované rozhovory. Data jsme podrobili IPA analýze, díky které jsme zjistili, že nejčastěji se pečovatelé se smrtí setkávají při úmrtí klienta či při rozhovorech s klienty, kdy toto téma otevírají především klienti sami. V těchto hovorech se následně objevují témata jako potřeba ze strany klienta o tomto tématu komunikovat, přání klienta zemřít, vnímání smrti jako vysvobození, vidina shledání s blízkými po smrti, strach či víra.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to map the topic of death in the profession of caregivers in homes for the elderly. Specifically, to find out what attitudes towards death caregivers have, how they deal with death in their profession and what topics occur when communicating about death with clients. We used the DAP-R questionnaire to measure attitudes and found that the most common attitude towards death among caregivers is avoidant one, followed by fear of death and acceptance of death. We used semistructured interviews to explore the topic of death in the caring profession. We subjected the data to IPA analysis, which revealed that caregivers encounter death most frequently during client deaths or during conversations with clients, when the topic is primarily raised by the clients themselves. In these conversations, topics such as the client's need to communicate about this topic, the client's wish to die, the perception of death as a release, the vision of reunion with loved ones after death, fear or faith, subsequently emerge.
