Working with the meaning of new words in English as a foreign language classroom

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje problematice interakce ve výuce, konkrétně pak tématu zaměřenému na práci učitele a žáků s významem nových slov v hodinách anglického jazyka. Práci tvoří dvě hlavní části, z nichž první teoretická se ve třech kapitolách věnuje interakci ve výuce, výuce slovní zásoby a konverzační analýze. Na poslední kapitolu pak navazuje empirická část, jež staví právě na základech metody konverzační analýzy. Pro účely práce bylo využito šesti 45minutových vyučovacích hodin anglického jazyka, na základě nichž byla vytvořena sbírka 33 sekvencí. Cílem bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem učitel a žáci pracují s novými slovy, které se během výuky vyskytnou. Analýza dat ukázala, že k vysvětlení dochází nejčastěji formou překladu, definice, demonstrace a použitím skutečného objektu, což je doloženo na 8 vybraných ukázkách.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is devoted to the issue of classroom interaction, specifically the topic focused on how the teacher and students work with the meaning of new words in the English lessons. The thesis consists of two main parts out of which the first theoretical deals with the classroom interaction, vocabulary teaching and conversation analysis. The last chapter is followed by the empirical part which builds on the basis of the conversation analysis method. For the purposes of the thesis six 45 minute English lessons were used on the basis of which a collection of 33 sequences was created. The aim was to find out how the teacher and students work with the new words which occur in course of the lesson. The data analysis showed that explanation is most often achieved by translation, definition, demonstration and by using a real object, which is supported by 8 samples.
