Guru Disciple Relationship: phenomenological analysis

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl hlouběji proniknout do možných podob vztahu duchovního učitele a jeho žáka. V teoretické části práce je nejprve objasněna role duchovního učitele v kontextu východních spirituálních tradic a nastíněn možný pohled několika psychologických teorií a konceptů na vztah duchovního učitele a žáka. Dále je zde věnována pozornost patologickým a uzdravujícím faktorům v kontextu tohoto vztahu a jeho porovnání se vztahem terapeutickým. Tyto informace jsou doplněny o některá výzkumná zjištění vztahující se k tématu duchovního učitele a žáka. Výzkumná část se zaměřuje na jedince, kteří přijali svého duchovního učitele a na jejich zkušenost s tímto vztahem. Respondenti jsou vybráni ze třech duchovních skupin, majících základ v hinduistických spirituálních tradicích. Metodou sběru dat je polostrukturovaný rozhovor, který je následně analyzován pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Z analýzy vzešlo celkem osm hlavních témat, která se týkají přijetí mistra, vnímání mistra žákem, přínosu mistra žákovi, žákova prožívání vztahu k mistrovi, změny v životě žáka skrze vztah s mistrem, přání žáka ve vztahu s mistrem, žákovy aktivity ve vztahu a představy o vnímání žáka mistrem. Významné oblasti objevující se ve zkušenosti žáků se týkaly například zvýšení vnímané kvality života, zlepšení mezilidských vztahů a také přijetí sebe sama. Žáci vnímají svého Mistra jako průvodce a ochranu na jejich duchovní cestě, ve svých rozhovorech sdílí svou mnohdy velice osobní zkušenost z tohoto vztahu.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis is deeper understanding of various forms of guru – disciple relationship. In it’s theoretical part first the role of spiritual teacher is clarified in the context of Eastern spiritual traditions and the possible view of some psychological theories and concepts on guru – disciple relationship is outlined. Than is payed attention to pathological and healing factors in the context of this relationship and to his comparison with therapeutic relationship. Empirical part is focused on people, who received their spiritual master. The participants are chosen from three spiritual groups, which are based in hinduistic spiritual traditions. The method for collectioning data is semistructured interviews, which is consequently analysed by interpretative phenomenological analysis. The themes emerged from analysis involved acceptance of the master, percpetion of the master by disciple, contribution of the master to disciple, feeling of the relationship with the master, the changes in disciples‘ life through the relationship with the master, wishes of disciple in the relationship with the master, disciples‘ activity in the relationship and image of perception of disciples by the master. Significant areas emerging in the experiences of disciples was concerning for examle increasing of well-being, improvement of the quality of relationships and self-acceptance. Disciples consider their Master as the guide on the spiritual path, in their interview they share their very personal experience with this relationship.
