The Theatre of the Oppressed as an Instrument for the Integration of Homeless People

Abstract:

Cílem této magisterské diplomové práce je zjištění, jak lidé bez domova a sociální pracovníci, kteří měli možnost pracovat s metodou divadla utlačovaných, vnímají její možné přínosy a negativa. Odpověď byla zjišťována u konkrétního souboru v České republice, který byl zkoumán po dobu jednoho roku, a to zhruba od poloviny zkoušení představení přes premiéru představení a tři další reprízy až k závěrečnému rozhovoru, který byl proveden s odstupem asi devíti měsíců od premiéry, přičemž ve výzkumu byl brán ohled na to, jak lidé bez domova a sociální pracovníci vnímají možné přínosy a negativa metody divadla utlačovaných s odstupem. Teoretická část popisuje její základní koncepty práce, jako je bezdomovství, charakteristiky tohoto fenoménu, metoda divadla utlačovaných Augusta Boala vycházející z pedagogiky utlačovaných Paula Freireho a shrnutí využití divadla utlačovaných jako součásti práce s lidmi bez domova v České republice. Jako výzkumná strategie byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkum, z technik sběru dat polostrukturovaný rozhovor a zúčastněné pozorování. Jednotkou zjišťování byla skupina šesti herců-klientů a dva lektoři-sociální pracovníci, kteří byli členy souboru. Závěr práce obsahuje zjištěná pozitiva a negativa z pohledu lidí bez domova a z pohledu sociálních pracovníků, obsahuje doporučení možného vývoje v praxi a návrh témat pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The objective of this diploma thesis is to determine how homeless people and social workers who have been given the opportunity to work with the method of the theatre of the oppressed view its potential benefits and downsides. Answers have been sought with a specific company which had been observed for the duration of one year, that being approximately from the middle of the rehearsal process to the premiere to the next three repeated performances to the final interview conducted nine months after the premiere. The research focused on how homeless people and social workers see potential benefits and negatives of the method of the theatre of the oppressed with hindsight. The theoretical part discusses the basic concepts of the work such as homelessness, characteristics of this phenomenon, Augusto Boal‘s method of the theatre of the oppressed based on Paulo Freire’s pedagogy of the oppressed, and a summary of the way the theatre of the oppressed is used when working with homeless people in the Czech Republic. Qualitative research has been adopted as a research strategy, with data having been collected via semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The observation unit consists of six actors-clients and two instructors-social workers, members of the company. The conclusion lists positive and negative aspects as viewed by both the homeless and social workers; it includes recommendations of potential practical development, and suggests possible directions of future research.
