Expressions and Idioms for "Woman" in French

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with phrases and other expressions containing the word "woman" (in French "femme"). It first looks at woman as a word. It examines the origins of the word, the development of its pronunciation and spelling, and then its meaning on the basis of dictionary definitions. Then, space is devoted to the stereotypical view of the female gender and its position in society. The theoretical part further defines the terms that are related to the topic of the thesis, e.g. idioms, phrases, adverbs, etc. The main aim of the thesis is to collect and thematically categorize French expressions and proverbs with the word "woman". The phrases point in particular to the characteristic features of women, name their profession or refer to women's sexual behaviour, a case of men's sexual behaviour towards women. Proverbs, on the other hand, reveal mainly the positive and negative characteristics of women and also touch on the relationship between men and women, in which one partner is dominant and the other subordinate. The thesis thus highlights stereotypes about women and their legacy in French phraseology.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce pojednává o slovních spojeních a dalších výrazech obsahujících slovo "žena" (ve francouzštině "femme"). Nejprve se věnuje ženě jako slovu. Zkoumá původ tohoto slova, vývoj jeho výslovnosti a pravopisu a posléze i jeho význam na základě slovníkových definicí. Poté je věnován prostor stereotypnímu nahlížení na ženské pohlaví a jejímu postavení ve společnosti. Teoretická část dále vymezuje termíny, které se vážou k tématu práce, např. idiomy, slovní spojení, příslovce aj. Hlavním cílem práce je shromáždění a tematické roztřídění francouzských výrazů a přísloví se slovem "žena". Slovní spojení poukazují zejména na charakteristické rysy žen, pojmenovávají jejich profesi nebo se týkají sexuálního chování žen, případě sexuálnímu chování mužů vůči ženám. Přísloví naopak odhalují především kladné a záporné vlastnosti žen a také se dotýkají vztahu mezi muži a ženami, v nichž bývá jeden z partnerů dominantní a druhý podřízený. Práce tak poukazuje na stereotypy o ženách a jejich odkaz ve francouzské frazeologii.
